That's a bit harsh. Tinkle inherited a team whose top returning scorer averaged something like 2.8-4 points a game. Out of Robinson's entire last two signed recruiting classes only one player (Payton) finished their eligibility at OSU, the rest either retired or moved on. Tinkle inherited a storm and only had 1 season under the .500 mark (so far, the CBI could come into play for the final record). If you wanted better, it probably only happens if the coach brings in a lot of one-and-dones or transfers that got booted elsewhere (like TSDTR did). Personally I'd rather not see OSU go that route. Payton did not sign under Robinson. Robinson originally recruited him, but Tinkle had to re-recruit him and his first year was Tinkle's first. You know, I actually knew that at one time. I unfortunately believed something I looked at on a recruiting page. None of Robinson's last two classes actually finished their career's worth of eligibility at OSU. That's a two year hole, and it can't be pinned on Tinkle.

A .500 record, no embarrassing scandals or huge blowots. We were competitive in every single game. IIRC before the year I think I said I would be pleased with 17 wins, and that sentiment was pretty much the median expectation around here and of other Beaver fans I had talked to, so the results were in line with what we most were expecting. Now the WAY we achieved those results were annoying at times: - Losing to teams we should have (Kent St, Wyoming, etc)
- A bazillion game road losing streak
- Choking away multiple games with stupid turnovers, missed free throws, and long, Long, LONG scoring droughts...
But really this year was a HUGE step forward from last year, and even as the year went on you could see the team getting better and better.
The defense really shored up as the year went on, The offense, while ragged at times, started actually producing results. We saw flashes of brilliance from a couple of freshman in Ethan and Hollins, Stevie stepped up and was playing quite well in the second half of the Pac-12 schedule, and we even had a first team all pac-12 player!
Now hopefully they ALL come back next year, and we pick up a killer JUCO PG!
BTW, JUST SAY NO to the CBI... no need to PAY just to AT BEST prove that you are the 101st best team in the nation. Plus the possibility to go 0-1 is very real, and 16-16 just feels so much better than 16-17 would... Let Tres heal up, go concentrate on your studies, and cheer on the WBB and baseball team!
Agreed. Between last year and this year, that was a nice turnaround.
OSU has real opportunity to take another step forward next year if everyone comes back; the NCAAs are a real possibility if things go right. I like to see Tinkle keep going and moving us forward.
Two things we need to go our way to get better:
1) We have to get better and more consistent on offense. Scoring droughts of more than five minutes (game time)--and we had much worse droughts than that this year!--nearly every game have got to be exorcised. There's no way to win a lot of games doing that over and over and over.
2) We need depth. We need three guys who can come off the bench and give the team 5-8 points per game. This year we had zero do that. Depth is the key as to why the team lost so many close games this year...they did not have the gas in the tank to finish out.
We iron those two things out and we might have a ball club out there. Another thing: Everyone needs to come back, but I have a feeling not everyone will. The guys who are thinking of leaving...I don't think they're NBA-level, at least not at this point.

I see 20 wins next year.
And I say yes to the CBI this year, if we can play at home. That could get us near, or at, 20 wins this year. Now doesn't that sound better than .500?? I'm not afraid of playing and losing.

I will be very surprised if Eubanks comes back. He was very close to leaving last year. I hope the improvement with the team this year will change his mind.
That being said, he has no chance to make it in the league unless he improves in a couple of areas. First of all, he has got to work on his mid-range game. There are not a lot of bigs that can make it in the league that can't consistently hit from at least 15 feet. Second, his biggest issue is double-team recognition and passing out of it. He takes way too long when he gets the ball down low to make a decision. He either needs to make a move or dump the ball back out. He typically waits until the double-team gets to him and then tries to pass it out. He needs to recognize that he needs to get rid of it when the guy starts coming and not wait until he gets there. Add to that, that he is not a good passer. That was evident last night when USC double-teamed him and he through it away on more than one occasion.

He also wants to dribble before shooting - the average NBA player will strip him of the ball before he can ever get a shot off. This is all experience - I am hoping that he comes back.

Great thread.... I'm all for Wayne getting some more time. The way we have finished this year has me more optimistic. I'm in the camp of Drew needs to return and I completely agree that we need depth. I really like Hollins for his athleticism and hustle, if he could be a true 6th man and bring energy, rebounds and points every night that would be huge. I also think Ethan is going to really blossom next year. I can't believe this thread is now 2 pages long, flirting with recruiting and comments on next year and nothing on a true point guard. So, I did it and I think we need 2 true point guards... again the good to great Pac 12 teams have depth. No more living on the edge of your seat when foul trouble comes... we need a full complement of Pac 12 talent! I say play in the CBI! But no banner

This year was a solid step forward even though it was disappointing at times with all of the competitive losses. If we get everyone back, next year could be really intriguing . My biggest concern aside from our need for a legit point guard has been our inability to finish around the rim against the more athletic teams like usc. Depth needs to get better too and hopefully ZR and Hollins will make a jump next year. Maybe a year of work will bring us a different Ben Kone if his knee issues resolve.
I really hope Drew stays. He’s gotten bigger and stronger and become a far better player than I ever thought he would. He also seemed to mature a lot this year with much better court demeanor and attitude. But, he still has a lot of obvious offensive limitations. He tends to have trouble finishing against the more athletic bigs and it will be far harder at the next level. No real midrange game either. If you’re not even making the all conference team it should be obvious that the NBA is not a likely landing spot if you come out early. I suspect you’re playing in a mid level league overseas somewhere for a mediocre pay check or disappearing in the D league. Sheesh, take another year, get better, and then give it your best shot. And at least you’ll have a degree to fall back on at point when you’re done.

Agree with everything you say. That is the dude that I did not think would be back next year. Too bad; he 's not NBA level, yet.
