a primo offensive/defensive player. He's a great one and the great ones often seem to make those around them play better. And, at least IMO, the whole team plays more with more swagger and effectiveness when he's in the lineup (add: yes, we won, but I thought the team generally lacked "fire" this weekend). He might well be the single biggest key to how far this team goes this year.
Of course, Nick's absence for a while will help give valuable experience to some new guys who otherwise wouldn't have had a shot, but to be the WHOLE team we really are, we need him playing on a regular basis.

Pitching, Pitching, Pitching! Last weekend was not a display of a Top Ten Hitting Team.

Clearly, when you're strongest offensive position becomes the weakest.... it really hurts the offense.
But, just making the playoffs is the goal overall.

I had projected his absence to be one run per game, which is a lot for any single player. If it is more than that remains to be seen. The one constant in Arizona was agressivenes, at the plate, in the field...everywhere. I don't know that the Hartford series is a fair indicator to judge the intangibles, we will know more in the next couple weeks.

In Surprise the whole lineup looked to punish the baseball. Even the outs were hard hit balls, and most of the guys made the pitcher labor for each and every batter.

It was blinkin' cold last weekend. You try driving a ball in cold weather -- it's like someone shoving pungi sticks into your hands. But, that's fine. It's worse for warn weather teams that don't pitch or field well.

When he went the other way, well that was a bomb.

When he went the other way, well that was a bomb. IMO, The biggest differences between the two squads this weekend were hitting power and pitching edge. Bryce had some balls crushed, and in Pac 12 play, vs Pac 12 hitters, some of those would have been off the wall or out of the park. As it was, we had those shots. In their own conference vs the level of pitching they will see, that team may very well win their conference. And face it, our starting rotation is falling into place, just like our era. Hartford had a great approach at the plate and got their hits - their pitchers just gave up more walks and their defense a few untimely errors. And speaking of defense, OSU was also a level above Hartford, that was a well coached squad. Their center fielder, a pure frosh, was outstanding. He would be redshirting at OSU, but was a Pac-12 caliber player.
