First man to run the mile under 4 minutes in 1954. Passed away in Oxford, UK where he set his world record.
Interesting that until very recently all of the mile WR holders since Bannister were still living. But in the last year we've lost 2.

It is also interesting (to me at least) that among the names above, Bannister is the only one who did not win an Olympic medal. He finished 4th in the '52 1500 meters and retired after the '54 season to concentrate on his medical studies.
