First man to run the mile under 4 minutes in 1954. Passed away in Oxford, UK where he set his world record.
Interesting that until very recently all of the mile WR holders since Bannister were still living. But in the last year we've lost 2.
Bannister UK 3:59.4 (1929-2018)
John Landy Aus 3:58.0 (b. 1930)
Derek Ibbotson UK 3:57.2 (1932-2017)
Peter Snell NZ 3:54.04 (b. 1938)
Michel Jazy Fra 3:53.6 (b. 1936)
Jim Ryun US 3:51.1 (b. 1947)
Filbert Bayi TZ 3:51.0 (b. 1953)
John Walker NZ 3:49.4 (b. 1952)
Steve Ovett UK 3:48.40 (b. 1955)
Sebastian Coe UK 3:47.33 (b. 1956)
Steve Cram UK 3:46.32 (b. 1960)
Noureddine Morceli Alg 3:44.39 (b. 1970)
Hicham El Guerrouj Mor 3:43.13 (b. 1974)
It is also interesting (to me at least) that among the names above, Bannister is the only one who did not win an Olympic medal. He finished 4th in the '52 1500 meters and retired after the '54 season to concentrate on his medical studies.
