Most of the important points have been made already, but a couple of other thoughts:
- ASU - beneficial seeding - I think ASU actually benefitted from their seeding in the tournament. You get to warm up with UA, where a win was a foregone conclusion and your team gets to settle in to Key Arena. Basically you are prepping for your Beaver showdown the whole time. Kudos to their game plan, coincided with our bad outside shooting and the rest was history.
- Key Arena - sightlines? I have seen our "new" outside shooters air ball the three pointer in several years now at the tournament......this year it was Taya Corosdale. I just wonder about that....
- Bright spot - Aleah Goodman - while her shot was off, she continued to take it. And she drove, and she got in there and tried to rebound.
- "Forward by Committee" fails us - TC and MW collectively were 1-8 with 5 rebounds in 30 collective minutes. On a night when all the attention was on Marie.
- Continued evolution of KTMac - if she can deliver 10-12 points consistently, she can present some mismatches.
- Rebounding! - Whatever coaching method ASU's CTT uses is phenomenal - we were getting beat on rebounds for FTs even.
- Finishing at the rim - our guards don't slash to the rim that often, so many easy shots don't seem fall.
- Book on beating the Beavers - "dirty it up" inside on Marie with double and triple teams, stay true on Kat, rebound like crazy, pressure the ball handler, and make the rest of the Beavers beat you from the outside. We don't have a 4 that would scare anyone right now, and unless we are hot from the outside an opponent can afford to focus on Marie.
We could get hot and go on a run in the tournament, but this team has really done well to get to Top 10 ranking this year.
And the year after we got bounced in the first round of Pac-12 tourney I believe we won it all or got to the finals at the least.....
Much of the above is also eminently "fixable" - bring in some 4s that have muscle, grow a top center, get a world-class PG, and couple that with the growth of existing players and you have a team that will stay in the top half of the Pac-12. Problem is that many of the other Pac-12 teams are going to get much better, so I suspect we will be in about the same third to fifth in the Pac-12 standings next season.....
Hoping we can use this as motivation to go on a tourney run this year - I don't want this season to feel like the old MBB seasons where we did really well all season just to go out with a whimper come tourney time.
Go Beavers!
