Talk me off the ledge. Heimlich and yes, Gambrell (I know some disagree with him after control problems last year. I am predicting a stellar season for Gambrell) both have the "stuff" to be big time for the Beavs this year. They are both the type of talent to be effective all the way to and into the College World Series. Here's where I get nervous. After watching Tweedt and Fehmel for three years now, both, imho, have hit their ceilings as pitchers. While neither are "bad" pitchers, neither appear to have the ceiling to be consistently effective against higher level teams. If we are truly going to contend for a national championship, the third starter is going to have to come from someone else. I am thinking Abel or Mulholland although I am not sure Casey will let him out of the bullpen unless Chamberlain becomes the closer. Again, talk me off the ledge. Am I wrong in my assessment? Fehmel can be crafty, but he needs an umpire that understands the strike zone. That was not the case in his Series outing last year. The umpire loved the fast ball a foot outside, but off speed stuff had to be waist level and right over the middle of the plate. If Bryce is painting the corners and the umpire can "see" this, he is very effective.

I think Fehmel can be phenomenal situationally. Fehmel reminds me of Jonah Nickerson with better top-end stuff, although I do not think that Fehmel is as accurate as Nickerson. I personally think that Fehmel would be best in a long relief role with an occasional start, rather than a regular starter. The problem is that our staff is not quite good enough for Fehmel to be used that way and there are too many good pitchers to try and craft a pitcher strategy primarily around Fehmel. Whatever happens in the regular season, if Heimlich is still throwing into the Regionals, I would like Fehmel to move to more of a Joe Paterson roll. Guys like Fehmel are immensely valuable in conference tournaments and used to be very valuable at the College World Series. The 2008 changes, though, made guys like Fehmel a lot more expendable.
