Hmm.... Bringing gill into the 21st century has got me thinking, why not just let the beavers wrestling, volleyball teams and gymnastics use gill and build a brand new state of the art 21st century basketball stadium for men's and women's basketball team? This is purely just a hypothetical thought of course. But couldn't hurt to think of it if Gill is never referbished and updated to 21st century Stadium standards. That would be a great idea if we had a few hundred million clams burning a hole in our pocket.

They need to replace all the existing seats and install nice new seating. That might reduce capacity but so what. Also, they need to install hand rails up the aisles. I watch older folks really struggle to get up the steps. Gill, can be really nice if they keep updating it. No need for a new arena. I hear what you said about getting up and down the steps. The problem they have is if they do anything major with the steps they have to conform to existing building codes. The steps as they exist, don't conform to rise and run dimensions, and I don't see any way to bring them up to code because of the steepness of the seating areas. As far as hand rails go I agree they are needed big time. I recently gave them an idea of how they could design and install them but it would cost a ton of money. They can't put a rail up the center of the steps because they aren't wide enough. They could possibly widen them if they could get around the code issue. I can't believe that as youths, we used to go over to Gill and run those stairs from bottom to top and back to stay in shape in the winter. I won't go more than a few rows above the lower balcony now and have been sitting on the floor or lower balcony in the past few years. There is no way upper balcony at Gill is any steeper than the upper level seats at Hass Pavilion in Berkeley. And it was fully gutted, expanded and seismically updated and within the last 15 years.

There is no way upper balcony at Gill is any steeper than the upper level seats at Hass Pavilion in Berkeley. And it was fully gutted, expanded and seismically updated and within the last 15 years. All I can find about Haas Pavilion is that it was remodeled in the late 90's and had some cosmetic upgrades a couple years ago. I have no idea what the building codes in California were almost 20 years ago or what they are now. I do observe from your picture that they pretty much have handrails on all of the stairs which either means that their stairs are wider or they were grandfathered in the 90's. If they didn't change the stairs, they probably didn't have to bring them up to code. Whatever they did or didn't do doesn't change the code challenges of trying to renovate Gill. I'm not just opining about the code challenges in Gill. I have discussed these issues with people in the know from the athletic department. Perhaps you are an architect or structural engineer and can assist them in getting around the code issues. I'm not and I can't. Go for it.

I’ll let Barnes know that you want recliners for seats so that you are “comfortable” Barcaloungers would be nice. Foot massage option for a significant Beaver Club donation. In about 2009, I was listening to local sports talk in LA. I think it was Petros and Money. Anyway, Luke Walton was on the phone with them. Luke said his dad had made some sort of a deal with the local sports arena in San Diego. He got to have his chair ( I think Luke said "recliner") at every event in the arena. And for concerts it was always near the stage. So his dad would see the big acts like U2, Madonna and so on but also the rap artists I've never heard of. Bill likes music and if he was in town, he'd go. It was very funny to hear Luke say his dad would be asking questions to him and/or his brothers about some act he had just seen. It was also funny to imagine Bill Walton in his recliner watching Eric Clapton or Britney Spears.

Scott Barnes confirmed at the Town Hall yesterday that a new center-hung scoreboard and new LED lighting will be going into Gill this summer. Going to be great to finally enter the 21st century in that regard. Awesome. It was clear when they rearranged the speakers, it was with the intent of installing a center video/scoreboard. It'll be great for all sports that play in Gill. Volleyball, Gymnastics, Wrestling as well as MBB and WBB. Probably won't cost any money to speak of as these are typically almost completely subsidized by advertising. I hope it is similar in design to the one at the Huskies Arena (oldest arena in the conference) Redoing the ancient lighting system is also long overdue. I have seen the plans very similar to the husky one, I believe daktronics is the manufacturer
