After 6 games, before playing today’s game against Nebraska, Oregon State hitters have a team BA of .377. Seven everyday players in the order are hitting over .300. Madrigal is batting .560, Larnach .550, Rutschman .455, Anderson .412, Gretler .333, and Grenier .308.
The meat of the order, the 3-4-5 hitters have driven home 26 runs – Larnach has 10 RBI, Madrigal and Rutschman have 8 a piece. That is production plus!
Madrigal and Grenier are each 3 for 3 in stolen base attempts.
Who gets that DH slot? The 3 hitters OSU has used in the DH role – Nobach, Malone and Jones are a combined 4-16 or .250 through 6 games. The concerning part is 9 strike outs in 16 at bats. Maybe we could just let the old All-CIF shortstop at Agoura HS, Bryce Fehmel, hit for himself. I'll bet he can still swing the bat.
Today’s lineup: We saw Taylor and Claunch catch. Rutshman, Gretler and Taylor play 1B. Armstrong played 2B and Grenier played SS. Gretler, and Ober played 3B
. Confused?
The Beavers jumped the Cornhuskers early building a 5-0 lead early and then put it on cruise control to win 10-3. The offensively efficient Beavers put up 10 runs on 12 hits, 5 walks, 3 hit batsman and were helped by 3 passed balls and 2 wild pitches.
Kwan continues his fine play as the leadoff hitter going 2-4 and a walk, scoring 2 runs and driving one home. Opposing coaches in these two tournaments have discovered you do not want this guy on base. He has taken enough extra bases to win a game by himself. Is there a better leadoff hitter in the PAC-12?
Larnach poled one to dead CF that cleared the wall by about 2 feet today. He was 1-3 with 2 BB, 2 runs and 2 RBI. He struck out twice when Nebraska pitchers located successfully (he can be pitched to). The pitch he hit was an 87 mph fastball right in his wheelhouse.
Rutschman only had one AB and struck out. Playing 1B he had to leap to glove a high throw from Fehmel and coming down collided with the baserunner. He limped a little running off and by the time he reached the dugout, the limp was really pronounced. There was some speculation that he was spiked, pulled a hamstring or twisted a knee or ankle. The Trainer took him to the locker room at the end of the 3rd inning. He was walking into the tunnel when I last saw him.
FWIW: I like Ober. He is up there eager and ready to hit. Looks like he belongs in the box. He played some at 3B today.
Armstrong played 2B today and continues to struggle at the plate. He was 0-4 today, in the 2nd inning he came up with the bases full, nobody out and promptly grounded into a rally killing 6-4-3 double play. In the 4th, Anderson opened the inning with a sharp single. Andy again, hit into a 6-4-3 double play. In the 5th with runners at first and third, he popped out to the shortstop ending the inning. In his final at bat, he flew out to shallow LF. Andy is a good ballplayer but needs to assert himself with the bat. I’m hoping with more game exposure, his work at the plate will improve.
Error Department. Nobach tried to advance from 2B on a sharply hit ground ball to the 3rd baseman. He broke from second without seeing it go through or waiting for the throw over to 1B and then breaking for third. He’s twenty feet off the bag, the 3rd baseman fired to second and nailed him trying to get back to second. I’ll chalk it off to rust – he was out last year.
Bryce looked sharper today. He threw a lot of fastballs on the corners changing speed from 85 to 89 and touching 90 three or four times that I saw. His breaking stuff was effective (threw breaking balls in the 72-79 mph range) and I thought he had Nebraska’s hitters off balance in his 6 2/3 IP. He’ll mess with your timing if you let him – you can’t sit on anything, he’s unpredictable and will throw any pitch on any count. Allowed 2 ER on 5 hits and 1 BB.
Good outing IMHO.
Dylan Pearce, the transfer RHP from Crater HS via Southwestern Oregon CC came and pitched an impressive 9th inning. A lot of similarities with Christian Chamberlain. Pearce can pitch – he has a sharp curve ball and threw aspirin tablets at 92 mph on the Stalker today. One scout asked me, “where the hell did this guy come from?” Dylan will get your attention. Just another good arm in the Beaver bullpen (yawn).
Speculation from people I talked with today regarding Madrigal, nobody knows for sure but a broken bone in the hand or wrist was generally the take. Verburg isn’t here and obviously won’t be here. Adley is nicked. Gambrel was suited up again today and in cleats in the bullpen. Status unknown.
We’ll likely see Britton against Ohio State in the morning.
