Tough start to the game. Junior Meerha Nelson gave up single, single, homer to start the game. To the teams credit they battled back with two in the bottom half of the first. Meerha competed well getting us to the 5th with that same 3-2 score. She struggled in the fifth, I believe it was the third time through the line up, and gave up a couple more. She left the game with a couple on and no out down 5-2. Soph Nerissa Eason came in and gave up one but curtailed the damage.
Going into the bottom of the fifth we were down 6-2. What happens next in my opinion is what separates the top tier teams from the next tier. We loaded the bases with no out and went strikeout, double play to end the threat. I think if we score some runs there it inspires our pitching and defense. This is all conjecture of course but it seems to me that the top teams don't necessarily need the defense and offense to feed off each other. It's not that they don't, I just don't see the symbiotic nature as needed as it is with our team. Our hitters are in the 'hang on pitchers and defense mode' and our pitchers and defense are hoping for some run support. Not sure if this makes sense to anyone but it does to me :-) Both units are saying, 'need some help over here.'
Tennessee went on to score 3 more in the next inning. In the bottom half of the 7th Senior SS McKenna Arriola homered to make the final 9-3. I was real happy for her because that might be her 3rd or 4th career HR.
We ended up striking out 10 times. Four of those with runners in scoring position. Two in the bottom half of the sixth after getting the lead runner on. Strike out, strike out, caught stealing.
Good news is we get to play tomorrow! 12:30pm vs. #6/12 Auburn. Never seen a ranking system with such disparate numbers.
