The minute the players start earning a salary, I'm done. It certainly would change the entire college athletic universe for the worse. I honestly pray that never happens. I'm sure others disagree. OK, but they can "Just Do It" without me.

The minute the players start earning a salary, I'm done. Sooner or later the public universities are going to start eliminating football, not because of the cheating, but because the liability from CTE and injuries will make it uneconomical for the state programs to get insurance. Very soon, some university is going to get hit with damages from a CTE case or medical retirement that will be the dam burst.

The only thing that might stop this as an inevitability is whatever kind of football Vince McMahon comes up with this next year. If he can produce something that looks violent with fewer head injuries he might be able to save the sport and a whole new generation of kids can get football schollies while working on their marketing and theater/film degrees.

Except it's not just head injuries. How many OSU players we see "medically retire" in the past five years. A lot of these kids will be crippled for life. I have heard of developing cases where a public university has sub-standard medical programs, i.e. much lower quality than, say, USC or Florida or Michigan, is sued because their underfunding of the medical part, has resulted in long term disabling conditions. It won't take many of these to decimate publicly-supported sports programs.

If this happens.... schools stop Football programs doesn't the entire Athletic Department financially unravel? I'm not saying it will or won't happen. I honestly hadn't considered the CTE issue landing on colleges and it is a fair concern/point. If we think this is a possibility.... we shouldn't be renovating the rest of Reser, that would be a bad investment with no return. I know wrong board but the thread is here. Intriguing to think about. Mostly I hope we get the CTE prevention figured out ASAP as the little I know about it scares the crap out of me. New helmets, new rules, something. Rambling over for now.

There is a story about a Fusky player in the 50's who was drafted. When asked if he was excited about playing in the NFL, he said something to the effect that "he was excited about the NFL, but that he wasn't happy about the pay cut. Then I read a story from the Little O written by Danny M's great-great grandfather, I think, making noise about how the Oregon State football team in like 1905 or that vicinity was made up of ringers and players not even enrolled in classes. The beat goes on. I don't know...I don't think that boosters actually pay players anymore...

As it is currently set up, the Athletic Department would financially unravel, yes. However, you have to remember that, while football is the biggest money maker, it is also the most expensive program to run. Something would undoubtedly take football's place. One should remember that the first football stadiums were primarily laid out on the infields of track and field stadiums or shared the field with the baseball team. Soccer stadium dimensions are not much different than football. The Athletic Departments would evolve.

Miller could probably claim he never paid a recruit. I don't know if it was ever claimed he handed anyone money. Word games.

Wait - don't tell me ... I know how this ends. Yahoo's investigative reporters wins some journalism awards, Arizona loses recruits and underperform in the post-season, and everybody outside of Arizona never end up hearing or knowing the full story. Do I win?
