Weather in Surprise warmed some today, it reached 57 degrees at 4 pm. Seeking sunshine, more fans were down both foul lines than in the grandstand which is shaded by the partial roof.
The Beavers weren’t cold – their bats were on fire. Eighteen more hits today including 5 extra base knocks and some fence clearing by Madrigal (way out about 370’) and fence rattling by Rutschman (triple at about 390’). In the last 3 games, the Beavs have outscored their opponents by 29 runs.
Heimlich looked better today (he never looks bad) Thought his slider was sharper and his fastball was dancing between 92-93 mph through 4, then he parked on 91-92 in the 5th and 6th. Command was excellent. Was on the knees all 6+ inning and mowed down Nebraska’s first 5 hitters in the order (6 through 9 don't well).
Zac Taylor is locking down the 1st base job with excellent defense and had 2 hard hit singles today in 4 at bats. Our middle infielders continue to shine with several plays in the field including a sparkling DP.
Kwan and Larnach made difficult catches in the outfield today. Our outfield is solid defensively in spite of Anderson losing a fly ball in the sun (Nebraska lost 2 in the sun).
Nebraska didn’t start any of their front line rotation today. They went with Waldron and relief by committee. Waldron usually appears in relief.
Chamberlain came on in relief of Heimlich and started off with a couple of hanging curve balls that were 3 feet outside, a base on balls, a single and then settled in and struck out 2 to end the 7th inning. He allowed a double in the 8th but then struck out the side to end the inning. In the 9th he walked the first hitter, then quickly retired the side. No earned runs and 5 K’s in 2 2/3 IP. I like this kid!
A surfacing concern is our DH role. Nobach singled today then was picked off at first. Next time up he struck out on a bad ball, then grounded into a 6-4-3 DP. Malone, pinch hitting for him, singled to LF. Our DH stats through 5 games are a concern.
Ohio State scored 7 runs in the first inning, then cruised to 7-2 win over Utah in the late game. The Buckeyes pitched Curlis, saving Feltner for us tomorrow. Feltner is the #1 MLB Draft prospect in the Big-10 Conference.
