Her physicality just amazes me. I thought Jamie was a great athlete but Mikayla is a powerhouse. And like the 1600 meter runner she was in HS, she can go 40 minutes if necessary - no problem.
It it really shows in her rebounding numbers.

Katie Mac disputes this. She said on Beaver Sports Talk she thinks she has a better arm than Mik.

Katie Mac disputes this. She said on Beaver Sports Talk she thinks she has a better arm than Mik. I would be shocked if she could out throw Mik. At the Stanford game last year I saw Mik throw one of those balls from the key into the top 10 rows on the north side. I wouldn't try getting an extra base, or tagging up on a fly ball, on her!

Coach R agrees with you. Evidenced by who has inbounding on long length of the floor inbounds plays.

It was funny watching the boys try to cover her in hoops and watching her quarterback against them in football all the way through middle school. She had a great arm even in 5th grade. She went to Massachussettes and won a couple of national hoop shoot titles in elementary school, then she’d run track in the spring and burn everyone. She has always been a rare athlete. Mik was a top notch, nationally-ranked javelin thrower if I remember correctly in high school, and I know she’s got a great arm, but Katie is no slouch.

And neither are PGs... only out of necessity this year. Mik is going to have to really work on her shooting thus of season to not be the weak link with what is returning and coming in... on the offensive end. Her toughness and knack to go get the ball are great but she also needs to be more of an offensive threat. She plays a lot like a few of our past 4s without the size.

I'd like to see her work on scoring at the rim more than her outside shooting. We have lots of shooters, but I'm more concerned about points in the paint next year without Marie and the new bigs needing to develop. If Mik can develop a few more ways to finish in the paint (a floater in particular), she could be deadly at getting our shooters open. There's always room for GPII-type player on the court - great rebounder, tough defender and good passer - especially with so many scorers around her.

She does need to get better about finishing at the rim. The bigger thing she needs to change is her tendency to drive into the paint and stop... in which case she often gets the ball stolen or gets called for 3". As a 2-guard next year she maybe will feel less pressure to force the situation and be more selective about when she drives. I'm not very worried about inside scoring next year. I feel that our new bigs, being more athletic, will come up to speed in the preseason and will do fine with Destiny delivering them the ball. I also expect Simmons to be contributing to scoring in the paint... she might even become an option to back up Destiny at the point. Of course all of this is speculation until we get a glimpse of the new team in November. One thing for sure is that all of our three-point shooters are back and should be as good or better than ever... and they should see even more open looks with the other team concerned about our size in the paint.

I just can’t emphasize enough the difference it will make to have Destiny at the 1 running the show next season. Not just a good point guard, an outstanding one, proven at the highest level of college hoops. Unavoidable given transfer rules, but I can only imagine how much tougher we would have been this year had Destiny been eligible to play with Marie in the middle for a year.
