Imagine the impact a quality pg would have for our squad;
STJ - turns into a true shooting guard hovering around the arc, feet set for kick-outs from the pg drive, or TT/DE. What goes away are ineffective STJ drives where he is hoping to make contact, seldom gets the call, and misses the shot too often.
TT - becomes much more effective, working off the ball; backdoor, baseline, and down the lane & hit with the pass at the right time so as not to have to utilize his limited dribbling skills. What goes away are his choke post, spinning drives into traffic.
DE - turns into a pick and roll machine, getting the ball squared to the hoop, where I have to imagine he would be much more effective than with his back to the hoop. This is the biggest wildcard for me because I am not convinced he can be a consistent offensive threat in any scenario.
SB - becomes an offensive option, and easier pass, for pg/TT/DE coming down the lane and his defender provides help. Also a great cleanup guy on the boards in the same scenario when he doesn’t get the pass.
New PG - with three primary options in STJ, TT, & DE pg is going to get a fair share of easy layups. We also can now run an effective fast break, where currently, I am willing to bet, we convert about 50%.
I think we are one piece from being in the Pac-12 mix, granted, a big piece. I only offer this up as a counter point to those banging on WT for his coaching. We are a pg away from being a dam good team, and to his credit, I think he has tried to get that piece and some unfortunate circumstances have left us wo a pg. I don’t think it is enough to drive him off. I would give him a chance to correct his recruiting woes (maybe new assistants are in order?) before running off what I think is an otherwise good coach.
