Not surprised that So Cal players would like to play for hometown teams. But looking at this so-called rivalry game it is striking that hardly anyone is there. Friends and families, that’s about it.
I would think that players would want to play in front of thousands instead of dozens.

For a lot, it isn't about playing in front of thousands or hundreds. It's about playing in front of 2 or 12 - family and friends. Studies have shown that the #1 factor in recruiting is geography - specifically, being able to play in front of family as often as possible.
And UCLA and USC have a few decent academic program - they are competitive with OSU in a few fields.
