As a fan base, we have to do better. Basketball is the game where the crowd can have the greatest influence on its outcome.
In the last three minutes, Coach T was imploring the crowd behind him to make noise and stand while the Beavs were trying to get stops on UCLA. I'm glad he did because the fans were viewing like they were watching a movie. You can see that our players are trying to make this a special season. Odds are they will fail and win something like seven or eight conference games. But there is a chance and as fans, we can help. We can help will this team to wins.
The next two games can get this team rolling. A sellout with an intense and boisterous crowd may get this team over the hump against USC. Two or three-thousand in orange next weekend in Eugene can help complete the sweep.
A high-school junior who may be considering OSU along with other middle of the pack P5 teams may see the enthusiasm and end up selecting the Beavers.
I hope the students and all the fence sitters are ready to attend Saturday and be loud!

How the h*** are we only getting 5330 into Gill for U*C*L*A . . . On the first home game after a Civil War victory . . . When the team has a winning record and is playing very watchable basketball . . . and Vegas has pick-em odds? ? That's just embarrassing.

I'd wager that a substantial % is 50+ years old. And it's just a fact of life that many people >50 don't want to stand up and holler at games no matter how exciting they may be or how much the coach implores them. Solution. Get some younger fans in there.

Not making an excuse, because I was a little surprised at the turnout, but 8pm midweek games in Corvallis are going to have a lower turnout. The "day" or "our crowds" are over... TV, 8pm, not UCLA of old, kids of today... just too easy to stay at home than fight night driving, weather, video games, etc. Not even $6 Stub Hub tix to every men's game help! But, the true factor is the kids. Gill was packed when half of the place was students. Even the present day large crowds are when enough students show up to begin having to sit in the upper level corners and spread toward the middle. Students today are not even in the same stratosphere as far as rapid fans as those of us from the 70's-90s. It's not old-man memory... it's a fact. Also... for the older folks, unless they are paying for the lower bowl/floor seats it is very difficult to maneuver. The incline, size of steps, distance between rows are actually quite dangerous for those even a little unsteady. When there is enough interest Gill truly needs an overhaul. It doesn't have to be plush, but it needs to be safer, with less seats... maybe 6500-7000. The Beaver Dam has basically run it's course and student seating needs to be moved to the end of the courts and up when enough actually show on a regular basis. Make Gill a little harder ticket to get. Even for student. When football tix were limited students lined up on Mondays for them (although now it is online delivery) Pricing doesn't have to increase, but a revamped Gill with 7k seats could be a crazy loud environment and seem almost full for every game. Winning isn't always the answer. All you have to do is look 'south'. The incredible run of the past few years doesn't come close to filling a modern arena (although too large to begin with) with a larger draw/front runner crowd.

We should never, ever, ever, in a million years have a problem getting 9,000 people in there. We had around 8,500 for the Civil War. We are Oregon f%#*ing State man. we have 30,000 students. We have a large alumni base. enough to get some butts in the seats, that is for sure. OSU needs to help out here. Lets get the marketing machine spun back up and help generate some excitment. This is an exciting year. It really is. This is shaping up to be a pretty huge comeback year for us. Not sure why Oregon State can't help make some noise about that. Just keep winning, they will show up. Get those start times back to 7 on Thursday and a reasonable 3PM or 5PM on the weekend game.

I attend games all over on a regular basis. Some are not in great locations, some have issues, but overall the interior of Gill and the accessibility is terrible. The remake at UW and Furd were awesome. The crowds will NEVER be consistently at 9k again... EVER. It is not marketing or game times. Students are just not rabid fans anymore. TV, social media, streaming, etc make it too easy for the young casual fan to do other things and still keep abreast of games. The seating reduction will be due to safety, code, and cost. Gill the building is awesome. But, we are not Duke. We will not ever be Duke and fill this type of arena consistently. It's not loser talk. It's solid economics, safety, and building a younger fan base.

BTW, Matt Knight Arena is used for a variety of other events throughout the year. It is not just a basketball arena.

I'd oppose significantly reducing our capacity. a 7K capacity is basically a 20% cut.

I don’t think shrinking the seating capacity of Gill would do anywhere near as much for filling it as two straight 20+ win seasons would. People want to see a winner.
I can remember walking into Gill 10-20 minutes before tip off with entire groups during the days I lived in the dorms and finding plenty of seats about midway up, or lower, for good sized groups to get in. That was back in ‘76-‘78. I only remember being in the rafters a couple times. It was getting tougher to get a group seat in ‘78, a year or two later getting a seat for a group was an event.
We’re coming off a down, very down, year. Even after close losses to top 20 teams on the road last week there were people on this board just about giving up on this team and coaching staff.
You can’t look at the last few years, heck, basically the last 30 years, of attendance stats and say that’s as high as it’ll ever get. If we end up getting our 17-18+ season wins this year and enough kids stick around for us to look like a tournament team next year, the attendance will go up. If they do well next year and appear to be able to follow that up again it’ll bump up even more. Gill used to hold 10k (400 more than now) and I can remember them looking to expand Gill’s capacity to like 12k plus (they settled for an extra 400 seats) during the good run. If the team could ever get to the point where it’s somewhat consistent tournament team, it’ll be more crowded in Gill and people will be happy we have 9600 seats. Right now we need more than one or two winning seasons here and there to really grow attendance.

Anyone who has attended any athletic event at uo knows the attendance figures are inflated. Crowds of 300 or so at baseball being announced as 1,100. It's hilarious. Yes, we know TTATT is used for other events, generally rodeos, bull-riding shows, monster truck rallies, etc. I guess the promoters know exactly where to go to stage hillbilly events. PS: Gill's capacity at present is about 9,100, after the recent lower-bowl remodel. The 9,600 is an old number that some places have not updated.

It's solid economics, safety, and building a younger fan base. I really disagree with that - multiple things. First some facts: Duke undergrad enrollment 6449. OSU undergrad enrollment 25,838. I went to a Duke game this year the weekend before Thanksgiving. It was a nothing game - Southern University. I got two tickets on stubhub for $250 (for the two). The student section is in practicality identical to OSU's. One hour before the game the sideline sections were packed. 20 minutes before the game, the entire student section was packed. I'm guessing there are 3000 student tickets. So almost half the student body attends. OSU does not have to be Duke, but the students have to care. Part of that is a function of student organizations. They need to get students excited and interested. Coach T is doing his part and more. He gave one student last night $500 in a drawing. The population of Linn, Benton, Lane and Marion Counties is almost exactly 1M. With 3000 students attending, there is a large nearby population base to sell the other 7000 tickets. This doesnt even include the Portland metro population. As an example, last night, New Mexico State hosted Seattle University. Thursday night game. I'm guessing not a big game for them. Las Cruces metro population is 209K. They had 5000 in attendance; by coincidence a close match to the number at Gill. Safety? Come on. I take this seriously. When you get unsteady, I agree, you should not be climbing into the top 10 rows. But there are a lot of seats near the main concourse. A hand rail in the aisles in the top ten rows is probably a good idea. I don't think that would eliminate more than 200 seats. In a few instances going back to benches instead of chairbacks would gain the losses back. But the biggest opportunity goes back to the students. After football, men's basketball is the biggest window on the University. There needs be both an encouragement to get students attending and a realization on the students part that full houses are great for the University. It creates both awareness and donations. And it's a hell of a lot of fun to maybe 2/3 of the undergrad population.

And it's a hell of a lot of fun to maybe 2/3 of the undergrad population. Lol... you can disagree all you want. But, you made several of my points... 1/5 of the students and still can't fill 3-5k student seats. They are not rabid fans. Part of Duke hoops and the students comes from 25 years of extremely successful hoops. We will never be that! And, no university marketing plan is going to make students show up consistently. It's not football. It's not just 6-7 Saturdays a year. Of the 15-17 home games 2/3 can be weekdays and/or over vaca. Secondly... over half the seats, approx 5900 of the 9100 are above the concourse. It's not just the top 10 rows... it's approximately rows 8-28. And, the incline, step size and spacing, and row widths are against code by today's construction standards. Seats aren't "saved" for those that need easy access. In fact courtside seats had to be increased just to meet disability standards. Third, additions like handrails are not allowed by code. Once you start to add anything like that you need to remodel to meet current codes. You can't half ass remodel a public venue. The seats were decreased once by about 500. When the next remodel hits seats will be lost to meet current building codes and ADA seating.
