Pretty short memory. The 2016 NCAA team was 6-3 in the second half of the Pac-12 round robin and won its first Pac-12 tournament game before the loss of Tres Tinkle finally caught up to it in 8-point losses to Cal and VCU to end the season.

I guess every team has a part of the fan base that thinks their coach is an idiot. That said, his results at UCLA aren't really an upgrade from what he did at Iowa and New Mexico (deeper tourney runs at UCLA, but less consistent overall so far). And he had the benefit early of bringing in his son as well, of course It is nice to see this year that nobody sees OSU as an easy out, and we've proven that to be the case.

This is a really minor nit as I'm thrilled with the win and happy to see us give the bench some minutes in the first half - but found it odd that he basically sat all of our scorers at the exact same time in the first? Figured he'd stagger it a bit... oh well. - We won so I'm going to shut up and enjoy it!
Crazy conference - we've beaten 2 of the teams ahead of us and lost to 2 teams behind us. Stanford somehow sits at 5-1 after their terrible non conference start. Going to be a grind every single weekend.

I hope they give Benny's House some props in the post game for all our insight to success. My pet peeve handled so much better. The total minutes prob not that much different, but the judicious use of subs and around a few timeouts gave starters rest. I'm not saying it's the difference, but without a doubt we were much more focused and energetic on both ends. And, the substitutions didn't hurt a bit. Both starters and subs were terrible at times in the first half, but uglied it up on both ends. SC is more talented, but also seems to play without discipline and focus at times. Another effort like this could ugly it up and frustrate them for a sweep. Best game of the year... players and staff. agreed SC has more guns than UCLA. UCLA airmailed so many 3s i thought i was watching wenatchee state. Part of that was the beavs extending their zone and UCLA seemingly not having quickness to get open inside. SC looks to have some real athletes and will be harder to screen out. Beavs walled off the bruins very effectively. Surprised they hung around so long actually.

"But hey, congrats to Oregon State. This is a big win for a rebuilding program, and the sign of a well-coached team is how well they can impose their will on the other team, and make no mistake, the Bruins were forced to play Beaver basketball. Oregon State ground the game to a halt for most of the game, and any time the Bruins got close, the Beavers would regroup and get some timely offense to stymie any Bruin comeback. And late in the game, when the Bruins had managed to retake the lead 60-59 with 3:24 remaining, the Beavers rattled off 8 straight points to essentially put the game away. The Beavers also had a balanced offense, with 5 players getting to double figures in points compared to a paltry 2 for the Bruins." Interesting perspective. Do we, Beaver Nation, view Oregon State as a "well coached team" that can "impose their will on the other team". I will say, we are sure trying. Not so sure I will claim we are there yet.

This team has not just progressed, it has changed. Probably not really the reason but when JM dropped the change started. The defensive intensity became consistent. The defense is now statistically and to the eye elite for the conference ( 68.3 per game best in the Pac 12). The team has found a hard edge. You see the ball stoppers forcing the scorers to their weak side and the other defenders are instinctively filling the lanes. Even the bench guys were assertive last night. Stacey and Hollins got called for some fouls based on aggression rather than being out of position or being lazy. This defense is getting fun to watch. On the offensive side turnover margin keeps getting better. Beavs have moved up to 5th: Oregon State 18 242 13.4 238 13.2 - .20 That number there is the key to closing out wins so here's to seeing that getting into the positive range and staying there.

I would not consider that a great March. But point well taken on second half of season.

That’s when I realized we had a very good shot at winning because it didn’t change much at all. At worst a 4 or 5 point lead became a tie, and I’m not sure that even happened. I think being able to pull most/all your starters for a few minutes in the first half and not lose a lead is about the best thing we could see for this team.

OS didn’t lose ground during that time but it sure looked ugly with Stacy dropping the ball, Kone looking very uncomfortable with the ball 15 ft from the hoop and Hollins “leading the break” with his left arm extended down the court. I’ve seen 8th grade teams “look” better but they played hard and UCLA shoot poorly. Take the W and prepare for u$c
