"what was most impressive about Wiese tonight was her ability to make the tough shots right when Townsville needed them the most.."
Sounds like Sydney.

Great job by Sydney! I was curious as to how much the women are paid in the WNBL of Australia, and found this: "The WNBL Players Minimum Conditions Agreement will allow for players to earn a minimum of $7,500 with no cap, as well as improvements to travel conditions, promotional commitments and guidelines around development player contracts. Average wage has now seen an overall increase to $33,660 annually, an $8,000 improvement on last season." wnbl.com.au/blog/news/historic-pay-deal-wnbl-athletes/At least one gal makes over 100K. Compare this to the USA's WNBA: "While all ballers dream of one day playing professionally, the average WNBA rookie can expect to earn a disappointing $36,500 for the year, and WNBA players with at least three years of experience earn a minimum of $55,000 per year. Overall, the average WNBA player is paid around $72,000." It looks like 1-3 gals per team make at least 100K (with a cap of 113.5K). Here are the WNBA salaries for all players by team: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1PsHkvE7SJtsV7fq7QHt7UfKPQHJg7_uLgZIkbwPbdi0/edit#gid=1035596555Looks like Sydney made 42,600 for LA Sparks in 2017. I don't know what she makes in Australia.

Remember that the Aussie dollar is only about 80 cents US.
Still, the economics of the WNBL are brutal. Townsville Stadium only holds 2200 and teams play about 40 games. If the average ticket is $10 and Townsville sells out every one of 20 games, ticket revenue is only about $440000. (Season tickets start at about $5/game). Yeah, you can add concessions to that, but you also have to subtract venue expenses. The league went for a couple years with no TV, and its current contract only televises one game per week (at 3 pm Saturday), plus the playoffs - so there can't be much TV money. There is surely some corporate sponsorship money involved. But this is clearly a shoestring operation. I doubt the total revenues come to a million dollars per team, which has to pay for travel, coaches and trainers, uniforms and equipment, promotion, administration, insurance . . .
In fact, Townsville nearly went bankrupt about 5 years ago, and today is a "not-for-profit, community owned entity". It's not like Europe, where millionaire egos drive the business, or the WNBA, which is subsidized heavily by the NBA. These ladies really have to put out a compelling product and get butts into those stands if they don't want their paychecks to bounce.

I don't know what she makes in Australia. With all due respect, while I'm sure some folks find this stuff fascinating, I really don't care how much or how little they make. The WNBA's financial struggles are well known so it shouldn't be any surprise that the women's league in a country with 7% of the US population is a somewhat marginal enterprise. Canada with 1.5x Australia's population has no professional women's basketball league and no WNBA franchise. The amazing thing to me is that they have a pro league at all and that it has managed to survive continuously since 1981. I'm just interested in the games.

Sydney Wiese Game 1 HighlightsNot sure what to make of that male assistant slapping her on the behind at 0:45. I’m sure Syd took it in the spirit intended.

You should probably alert the local authorities. Makes no difference to me. If I were Syd's dad I might feel differently. And I'm glad Scott Rueck doesn't slap his players' behinds.

I've oft wondered about that especially in today's recent climate. Probably not appropriate! But(t) I can easily see it happening innocently too. Ooooops! My bad!
