if i can give a preseason grade it was about a C-
Lost winnable games to deeply flawed teams, but on the plus side there were individual performances good enough to register in conference play.
Will this team show improvement and consistency starting now? The effort level has been high enough but just not playing a heady brand of ball. Most tragically, the lack of execution on offense, especially when you expect an actual play to be called, like coming out of a timeout, has submarined this squad from game 1 to the final preseason game against the golden hot flashes. These beavs have some bread and they have some butter but can't seem to put it together. With 4 juniors and a grad transfer senior all in the heavy rotation there should be more gelling by now. Maybe the best is yet to come but i don't expect anything.
Will this team leverage Drew Eubanks better?
Kudos to Drew for playing through illness. That looked uncomfortable. But even if you throw that Kent st game out you see a tantalizing but under utilized inside scoring weapon. Are there other ways to get Drew the ball down low, even when he is double-teamed? yes. What happened to using the high low? Why don't we have more sets with Glig and Drew screening for each other? Why so few Lob passes over the top to him?
The beavs as a whole, are very weak at the pick and roll. You see a guy set a screen and then he turns the wrong way coming out of the screen so his back is to the ball, how is the "roll" even going to work if you do that? Maybe this team sees itself as loaded with iso guys that can break down a defender off the dribble. Tres and the Thompson Twins need to improve scoring off cuts and back screens. Pac 12 teams are not going to let them create scoring opportunities easily. Eastern Kentucky has left the building.
3 pointers. The Kent State game was The Ark of the Couldn't Hit. Let that be the nadir of bad 3 pointing for the whole season please. It is astonishing really to have seasoned guys with good strokes like ST and TT take bad shot after shot. These are good shooters but they take 1 legged, off balance, pot shots even when they are open. Is this coaching again? It seems like they are not setting up in a particular spot other than the deep corner. They just wander around then take a shot wherever they are when the clock runs down.
Rebounding. Can we get more bang for the buck (in red)
