Just a quick gut feeling from this totally Uneducated Beaver Believer: OL recruits, both are quite light and will need to redshirt most likely, hopefully it means they are both pretty mobile though and will put on good weight with the new S&C coach and turn from meh 3 stars to great OSU OLinemen ala Levitre, Schuening, DeVan... We actually have some pretty good talent returning on the OLine. Brandel, Lavake and Luaina is a good trio, we need to find a center and hopefully one of the JC linemen we got last year figure it out and step up. Look for CJS and crew to go after a JC Center hard. QB, Man it sucks that Petras bailed... We really need for one of the RS freshman (Blount, Willard) or Dukart to work out, trolling for grad transfer or JCs every year is a recipe for disaster... Look for a flip or a transfer here as well though. Defense, Just my opinion but I see mostly depth in this class, no defender really stands out as a future star or even starter, JMHO, I especially don't get the hype for Isaiah's younger brother... He looks like *I* did coming out of high school... that is not a compliment... He will need to reshirt and hit the weight room and cardio HARD for a full year... If I had to guess the two most likely defensive recruits to make a difference in their time at OSU would be Tufaga, probably moving to a string safety or hybrid OLB role, or Deshon Wilson who has legit NFL body for a corner... of course so did Christian Wallace, hopefully Deshon knows how to backpedal I would assume all of these guys redshirt with the possible exception of Deshon. Receivers, TE Isaiah Smalls is probably my favorite recruit of the bunch! And not just because he was super committed to OSU, and encouraging others to join as well, but because he seems very bright and looks like a true, pass catching TE, strong enough to block, but fast/quick enough to beat linebackers and good hands. If Riley ends up coaching the TE I could see this position taking a HUGE step forward, both with Togiai being tutored by Mike to get over whatever mental block he has catching and holding on to the ball and with the addition of Smalls (I think he DOESN'T red shirt and makes an impact as a freshman, he looks both mentally and physically mature). Jesiah Irish is a little under heralded and quite slight, but if there has been one constant with the beavs even through the QA desert is we manage to find pretty good WR, hopefully Irish follows in that mold... Physically he reminds me of Sammie Stroughter. Last but not Least RB, Hey! A RB from Texas named Rogers (I know spelled different) he is going to be great!!! Like I said just my first impressions based off of their names, one photo, and a few glimpses at grainy 24/7 videos!

Thx OBF this is what I wanted to discuss. I, just like you, embrace them all now as BEAVS. It will be really exciting next month to see what new in roads the staff can create. Exciting times for sure

Kid was a monster in high school. completely dominate. he was a tackle and sack machine. His size is not that bad. 6-0 and 290. He is in a good place to build from. He probably red shirts, but he isn't that far off. Give him a good year of quality weight room and we have a lean and mean 305 pound DT. That is a good size. you still need speed, even at DT in this league. Good kid, academic honor roll, and smart.

I'm not going to pretend to be a DL expert, but I'll say this: We've recently seen what mammoth-big and slow looks like at DT. It ain't pretty. I'll take smaller + quick/fast/explosive all day long. Give me a 4-3 and John Randle/Aaron Donald types please (yes I know they don't grow on trees - but one can dream).

Here is some recruiting thoughts. Many here may think of this evaluation as negative, but I honestly was trying to look at things objectively. Unfortunately the negatives outweigh the positives right now. The best news is the class is not complete and final evaluation could be different. I agree with the sentiment of many here that there are different times to measure the value of a class. I see it very similar to evaluating a season. An evaluation of the quality of the team after the first game will change after the final game of the season. This does not change the value of evaluating things after the first game. The same thing happens in recruiting. You evaluate as recruits commit, then on signing day, then when recruits arrive on campus, a year later, 2 years later, 3 years later, 4 years later, and 5 years later.
1) Andersen had a bad class going on paper and it only got worse with the new coaching staff. The class is only half done and there is time for improvement.
2) The best recruiting schools are mostly done. We are half done, which could be good as we can improve. The class could also get worse on paper. The pickings look pretty skim as the best recruits were pressured to sign early.
3) This is the worst ranking on a class since 247 started keeping results (15+ years). Based off PAC 12 ranking (12th) and national ranking (87th). Coaching transition years are always bad, but they are especially bad at Oregon State with this year being the worst. Other coaches seem to be able to flip some commits, but we struck out completely. The class is not done and it could change dramatically. First year of early signing so it is difficult to evaluate.
4) 2 of the best recruits in the class were stolen late. Cam Thomas to Florida and Spencer Petras to Iowa.
5) Not a single pleasant surprise on signing day. I was hoping for at least one.
6) Isaiah Smalls recently tweeted about up to 4 silent commits. I think we saw only 1 of them. Either 3 are still coming or we lost them already. It is difficult to keep track so my numbers could be off.
7) The new coaching staff brought in only 1 recruit who is the lowest ranked recruit on paper. Hopefully they can improve on this in the late period. They basically traded this 1 recruit for a similarly ranked recruit.
8) The new coaches reached out to many recruits that they had relationships with coaching at other schools with offers/commits. There was not a single taker. This speaks volumes at to their recruiting ability, thus far. Not a single recruit wanted to follow these coaches to a new school. There is still time.
9) Many of the new offers look like desperation on paper.
10) Losing out on Djibril hurt.
11) 1 sure fire way to decrease the average ranking of a class is for it to be OL/DL heavy. This is just based on the numbers needed and how many are available. Every school usually finds their lowest ranked recruits are on the lines. We need our class to be heavy in these areas and it is not, so chances are good the average per recruit goes down. This also places less value on the average.
13) Many of our class are under ranked due to many reasons such as lack of exposure, lack of social media presence, late bloomers, committing early preventing exposure, talent with undesirable measurables.
14) They took risks with lower ranked recruits with huge potential due to measurables (size, speed, weight lifting, height, etc.)
15) We have signed all 11 commits. Many schools have a lot of there commits yet to sign. This spells opportunities to steal recruits, which we don’t have to worry about. When I looked UCLA had 6 signed with 6 commits that need to be signed.
16) We could sign about 11 more. We are about halfway done. The class could improve dramatically.
17) Our coaches are long term recruiters, which does not give fast results, as we see. They recruit to the school and develop long relationships. This gives slow results in the fast world of recruiting. The staff are not looking to make the quick sale. This long term recruiting will make better coach and athlete relationships when at the school. I think it will reap better results down the road.
18) Right now we need some DL juco help. There appears to be 3 possibilities. A good measurement of the staff will be whether they can get at least 1 of them.
19) Hopefuls for the late signing period include Victor Terry, Nikko Hall, and Isaah Crocker. Adding these 3 would really help the quality of the class. We need more OL/DL. Any of these recruits that we are still after are pretty low ranked except some of the jucos already alluded to. We shall see how it turns out.
20) I honestly didn’t want this evaluation to sound as negative as I felt it did. I just felt it needed to be a honest evaluation. It was difficult because I really like every one of the recruits that signed.
*Hodgins has incredible explosiveness that could net a lot of exciting plays. *Wilson looks like he is physically ready to play in college today with good height. *Smalls is an exciting person and player who is the recruit with the most impressive offers. *Dukart, to me, looks to have a really good arm. *Levengood has probably the second best offer list with excellent skills. The main downside is weight, which will be easily fixed. *Bickler, you cannot coach his size combined with speed. *Tufaga knows how to win and he is close to physically ready for college. *Francois, we beat out at least 1 PAC 12 school for him. I always like that and he listed at 215 to 225 lbs. He may be ready the moment he arrives. *Dawkins is under recruited, but to me you take 1 look and you can see that when he adds 35 lbs to be 300 lbs he will still be athletic. *Rogers appears to be a durable back and provides some explosive depth. *Irish looks fast and elusive.

I noticed that Teagan Quitoriano and Spencer Webb have not signed. These are some recruits that we were competing for. There are opportunities out there. We were second for Quitoriano.

I believe Teagan was supposed to sign last night. Last I heard he was still solid to oregon and intended to sign early. Think the deadline is today...

Our biggest opportunities to add sizzle to the class at this point are with Hall, Crocker and Ta’Zhawn Henry. We have legit shots at each of them and that could legitimize our class. However, to really make the class effective beyond position players, Kevin Hall and Tristan Nichols would provide immediate help on the interior of a swiss cheese 2017 defensive line. Other opportunities are sure to arise before signing day but those five are the biggest priorities. Without a high end QB option it’d be a mistake to force a QB in the class.

Yeah, I forgot to mention Ta'Zhawn Henry in the earlier post. Victor Terry is another quality recruit that it looks like we are the favorite for. Did you mean Kevin Scott rather than Kevin Hall?
