If he was DC he’d probably have been announced. He’s got zero reason for secrecy.

I'm sure JS has had that conversation with Riley. If Bray was ready to be DC I definitely think JS would have made the announcement by now. Maybe he is DC in waiting.

I suspect the new DC has signed off on Bray, or they have a position for Bray if a new DC doesn’t.

Not too big a surprise, really... Kind of expected, and am happy about it. But this makes it less likely (in my opinion) for Coach Hall to be retained. For reasons I’ve previously laid out I believe Hall would be a great addition to keep on the staff. If CJS is already saying, “okay new DC, you can hire everybody except we’ve already hired Bray, who I already hired as a member of your defensive staff”...that’s one guy already hired. Doubt CJS would hire two guys and have new DC only hiring a couple guys. So it would depend on whomever the new DC is and his previous relationships whether Hall would get a shot at being retained or not... My bet is no, but I’m still hoping.
Glad to have Bray back. He was a great coach and great recruiter! Love to have multiple lower level coaches on staff that see “the big picture” well enough that they could later step into a more advanced role. It just helps our team out...even if that means some could later take an advanced position with another team.

There’s still a lot of “love” for Hall, but frankly all we really know about him is he was a grad assistant two years ago, Gary Andersen hired him, and he was kind of the surprise interim coach. Unfortunately we really don’t know how good of a coach he is, largely to length of time served, who he worked under, and player shuffling due to injuries. I’m pretty sure it’s obvious to Coach Smith that Brayis the kind of guy he wants on staff, he’s a known entity.. Hall really isn’t a known entity.

For sure, we fans can only see what we see, and know what we know. Few of us (if any) have direct experience with Hall, but there is a reason he was promoted to the interim HC position...and I suspect his coaching career trajectory is UP regardless of where he lands. And the same could be said for Trent Bray, being interim HC at Nebraska this year. I trust Jonathan Smith has the knowledge to hire people that are the proper fit for Oregon State and assemble an excellent coaching team. And like everyone else frequenting this board, I am eager as heck to see the coaches that end up filling out the staff!

He was interim because he was popular with players for stability IMHO which is a good sign I believe that he will be a good recruiter and with the right staff an even better coach. I hope he wants to stay and they do retain him on staff.

What about just evaluating him on when we were healthy and getting routed, or a true frosh from psu was tossing it around... or wait the 3rd stringer/starting WR. Our DBs were terrible most of the year. I'd also argue they played better once he was named interim and wasn't the full time DB coach and Rushing did most of the individual work.
