For $20 I subscribed to the kenpom site. It's loaded with more geeky statistics than I've ever seen. It lists officials for each game and then you can click on that official and see his schedule for the last three years.
So after an hour or so of looking at this I've found that there are not Pac-12 refs. There are guys who mostly do west coast games, but a combination of Pac-12, MWC, Big West, WCAC and so on. They are also doing three or four games per week. They must be full-time employed by the NCAA? Does anyone know?
I got curious about Tommy Numnutz errr Nunez. He's the guy that Jarmel Reid tripped in Salt Lake City during the 15-16 season. That was his last Oregon State game until the game against Long Beach in Corvallis three weeks ago. To get an idea of these guys' schedules, Numnutz did the Utah State at Colorado State game on Jan 16, the Oregon State game on the 17th, Fresno State at San Diego State on Jan 19, Colorado at Washington on Jan 20, UTRioGrandeValley at Bakersfield on Jan 21, Boise at Wyoming on Jan 23, Fullerton at Davis on Jan 27 and on and on. In the conference tournaments that year, he did the Big Sky in Reno on March 8, the Pac-12 on March 9 and 10, the Mountain West on the 11th and back to Reno for the 12th.
Anyway, the entire thing is fascinating. Are there any refs who post here? I'd love to hear what you know about D-1 officials.

I know a bit more now than when I wrote that. Referees are independent contractors. I saw some pay figures for the 14-15 season. The P6 conferences were around $2500/game. Numbers went down from there in the $1500 to $2000 range for lesser conferences. The official is responsible for all expenses. There is a hierarchy on who gets each conference. A guy who is based on the west coast may have a contract with the Pac-12, MW, WCC, BigWest and so on. The Pac-12 has something like an A, B, and C list. First choice at picking games goes to A-list guys and then down the line. Reviews matter a lot, seniority a little. Someone new to D-1 officiating may be on the C-list for the Pac-12 and the B or C list for other western conferences. He may get five Pac-12 games over the course of a year and 60 from other leagues. A guy who is very busy can do as many as 100 games in a season. I see some guys that have about 10 Big Sky games. I'm guessing they are trying to break in and do primarily D-2, D-3, and high school games.
As a note, the NCAA tournament works differently. Pay is less, but expenses are included. The NCAA picks who they want. There is a rule that you can not do a NCAA tournament game if you've worked another game the day before. It looks common for a guy to do the first Thursday or Friday games and then get five or so more games at the lesser tournaments. During league tournaments, guys are extremely busy. Some guys work six days in a row starting at a P6 tournament and finishing at minor conference tournaments.

Not that that ever happens.
