I'm sure if I read through enough pissing matches I could find my answer - I just don't care to do that

Seems to be the million dollar question. I am guessing he still joins the staff but the lack of an announcement is odd. It would seem that Smith is waiting on his DC to fill out the staff, but I am curious what is taking so long. Gives me hope that it's a former OSU DB (even though I worry about an unproven DC) despite reports that he will be staying at his current school.

My guess is he's in, but we're waiting on a DC or Co-DC (with Trent being the other) to finish up with their bowl game before making any official announcement. I'm pretty sure the Lindgren/Michalczik hires were announced concurrently. I'm not seing any other defensive staff announced yet, the pieces might fall into place quickly once a DC can be announced.

Isn't the reason C Hall is still in a wait-and-see mode is because we are waiting on the DC announcement? It seems to reason that if Hall has to wait, or is free to peddle his services to another institution...then Trent is too. I really hope/think that the dominoes will fall when we have a DC.(Just please let it be someone worth waiting for)

It's an open marketplace, and it is up to each head coach to work to put together his staff in a timely fashion, based on all the parameters we see, and don't see. Timing is dictated by a lot of factors, as well as competition from other head coaches - I feel like I am staring at about 25 doors behind which there are white boards with lists of names, it's coach drafting season and everyone is on the same clock.

My guess is Niners waiting on a DC hire that’s committed to Bowl season.... and has to wait. I don’t mean they are currently a DC.... but who he’s talking to is committed. And he will allow DC to have say in his asst staff. Hence, we are not hearing anything on defensive side of coaching ball.

Could bring guys from his current staff and/or former staffs.
