This is a great point. We have a great hire in Smith that by and large the fanbase is extremely excited about. We should all get on board and trust CJS. anyone who does not support Mike coming back is undermining JS and should go crawl under a rock? BMOC cannot listen to an opposing view that some, if not many would prefer we move on without him. You are quite the socialist. Since when do you boys think you speak for "by and large" the fan base? Because that is you view and a handful of others that visit this Board? Is that how you build up your self esteem? Get a life It is a pretty simple connection... of course you're a little challenged in the neuron department. So, Mr Cranial Rectosis lets play dot to dot. If MR is indeed on the staff it is by JS's choice. He'd want him on his staff for it to happen... get that so far? If its his choice and you want to continually live in the past and demean MR you then demean JS and his decision making process. Even before one practice plays out you think you know better than the new HC and the numerous other HCs who deeply respect MR as a man and teacher of the game. So, in case you didn't notice (as I know your condition is progressive and your head grows deeper up your ass each day) this program needs all the great instruction it can get. If you want to continue your anti-MR sentiment feel free. It truly shows what an idiot you are now that we are in the midst in an exciting time. The more you post I'm more convinced you are a front running uck... hence deserve a swift cock punch. Alas, you'd have to have balls to for it to be effective. So, a waste of time... sort of like your posting! 😎

Boy, someone is thin-skinned. "We should all get on board" to you is equivalent to "I speak for the fanbase as a whole and will not permit anyone else to have an opposing viewpoint, get to goose stepping you commie bastages". Is that about right? See, the difference between you and me is that I don't mind a bit if someone disagrees with me. I may choose to voice my opposing opinion, I may choose to disagree with your opinion. I may even tell you that your opinion is stupid, if it is. You're welcome to do the exact same with me. What I will not do is lower myself to your level and engage in ad hominem attacks. You call me "BMOC" and I could retort that you are an insecure twat, but I won't. You call me "quite the socialist" and I could retort that you are quite the moron, but I won't do that either. I could choose to disparage your lack of self esteem and tell you to grow a brain in response to your "Get a life" but I also won't do that. No, instead I will ignore your petty personal attacks and simply say that I prefer to debate ideas. Here's some advice for how to do that in the future so that you can improve your posting content: Baseball: Anyone undermining Coach Smith should crawl under a rock Me: Actually that's a good point - this a good hire, we should be more supportive You: I don't think the opinion that we shouldn't hire Riley is undermining Coach Smith See how that works? Hope this helps. aha so that's an orange attack. Seriously Westlinn Patrick, i hope you post more here and in any manner you like. Dissenting opinions are the only way to keep this place interesting. i, for instance, was hoping for a bigger name with more star appeal but now that JS is the coach, he seems like exactly the right guy for the job and any coaches he picks will probably be positive additions to the program. the only bit of awkwardness i feel about Riley coming back is he will be assistant coaching 5th year seniors who he head-coached as Redshirt Freshman. That seems odd at the major college level. to be clear I also welcome dissenting opinions. Not much to talk about if we all just sit around agreeing. If you can stick to discussing the topic without resorting to figuratively flinging poo like a rhesus monkey people might even take you seriously and (gasp) treat you with respect. I know, it's crazy.

Every paid assistant needs to be willing and able to spend long hours on the road recruiting. Will Riley’s heart be in it? If not, he’d be better utilized as a consultant. Recruiting is the lifeblood of any program, and you can’t sacrifice a single spot on the staff. I feel like Riley would be able to handle the rigors of recruiting fine. He loves the game and still has passion (even if his time has past to run an entire program) and he’s not an ego guy, he loves OSU and Corvallis and has a great track record with QBs and receivers. In particular, I’d love it if even more than having a region, he was the guy recruiting QBs and receivers. I know that realistically assistant coaches don’t just recruit position groups, but if it was possible here, IMO that would be the perfect arrangement. Having him recruit QBs would be redundant when Smith is considered a great identifier and recruiter of QB talent. If anyone is primarily recruit a position group, it would be Smith with QBs.

I’m pretty sure Riley has an eye for talent, period. I remember hm saying several years ago when his coaching days were done he’d probably set up a scouting service. Riley wasn’t one to be boastful (speaking of which, GA’s radio spot stating “I like to build things” didn’t pan out overly well), but he admitted recognizing talent to be one of his strengths.

Not only his eye for talent, but his ability to coach up QBs is tremendous. Whomever recruits them here, we need someone who will develop them (didn’t see an iota of that with Captain Big Boy Pants and/or McGiven me a headache). JS can’t and shouldn’t be expected to carry the burden there..,he’s got an entire program to manage. He will obviously be good with his QBs, but he needs to have someone working with those guys every day that he can trust in every aspect of their development. Can’t think of many guys around who would be better at that than MR.

lifelong Beaver fan here. Super stoked to have Mike Riley on board to help any way he and JS see fit.
Mike Riley is a treasure to Oregon State University, the city of Corvallis, the state of Oregon, and college football.
looking forward to seeing which bright young talent has the smarts to sign on at OSU and develop into the next Beaver QB in the NFL under Riley's and Smiths' tutelage.

Yeah, I don't think we're going to have a shortage of D-1 QBs anymore.

Silver lining.....if this is true.....MRiley wouldn't take very much $$ as he doesn't need it. Knowing his character, he'd take a small salary and allow JS to give more to others.

MR could coach for $1 and the fine folks from Lincoln will be sure that he is the highest paid coach on the staff. Go Beavs!!
