Saw a photo of a tweet on the Facebook group that said Smith has signed a memorandum of understanding for $1.9 mil/yr for 5 years. However, there is no indication who the tweet is from (I'm guessing Moran?). Can anybody confirm this?
If true, I think that's a fair salary...anything over $2 mil would have been too much for his lack of experience, but you also don't want to insult the guy based on current market rates. Another tweet from Moran said that the assistant pool will be $3.3M, up from $2.6M this year. I like that we got a bargain of a head coach that everybody can buy into, and can now pay full market rates to get whatever assistants we want.
GO BEAVS!

I'd like to think that if I could pull down $1.9 million for two or three years I'd never have to work again for the rest of my life but that's just me. Hell - $1.9 million for one year would do it.

So, lookes to me like OSU isn't making a major investment in assistant salaries, Jonathan is, and OSU saves 50k on the coaches' salaries. 1.9 + 3.3 < 2.65 + 2.6

An assistants' salary pool jumping from $2.6 million to $3.3 million is a 28% increase (amount of increase $700,000 divided by original amount $2,600,000). Seems pretty substantial to me.

Seems pretty substantial to me.o You did notice GA's base salary was 2.65 this year and Jonathan's is 1.9 next year. That's a 750k difference. They're playing word games and spending less on our actual staff. Hopefully they will increase pool after the fired coaches have been paid off.

Yes I did notice. Gary had six years of FBS head-coaching experience, he should earn more than a first-year coach. Spending a teeny bit less overall, but spending the total more astutely.
You still have budget numbers to hit. Revenue will be down this year, with attendance cratering. So the Ohio State game, while distasteful, will essentially pay CJS's salary.

They said they would increase the pool for assistants. They're doing exactly that. It doesn't matter if the money came from outside sources or if it came from saving on the HC salary. They could have decided to save on the HC salary and NOT increase the assistant pool. The bottom line is that they are using the money to help JS get who he wants.

At age 38, I was an E-7 and all of Gulf Company didn't make 1 mill a year. I guess you could say 'Local Boy JS, Makes Good'. I did get free room and board, so I had that going for me. Powdered eggs and Spam aren't near as bad as they sound.

There is an 11% increase in the number of assistant coaches next year, so it's not as substantial as it might be otherwise. SaveSave

Once the other coaches are paid off we’ll be back to spending exactly what we were spending on coaching salaries , only the mix will have changed and there will actually be 1 extra coach. The AD made a big show of making a “mighty effort” to increase the pool of money to the assistants. Unless they made a mighty effort to talk Jonathan into taking substantially less than the last coach, really the only effort they made was taking the time to shift some numbers on paper. The real test will be to see what portion of the overall athletic budget goes to football in the future (and I’m not talking coaching salaries). The number has been dropping for years, and it’s dropping in comparison to the other schools in the league. Getting the coaching salaries in line with the other schools is a good thing, but will they make a “mighty effort” to keep up with the rest of the conference in support/facilities/recruiting and other aspects of the football program?

Like coach niner said all the schools have nice weight rooms, locker rooms, etc., when he was asked about OSU facilities. The schools and locations all have obvious differences but are separated by the quality of the coaching staffs. Looking at the number of coaching changes it is the most important factor in determinimg team success. Great coaches can overcome things. OSU will probably never have the best facilities but can have top coaches who want to be here.
