The big news in this article that nobody is talking about is Luton is coming back... He plans to be at 100% in the winter and hit it hard. He has consulted with doctors and they agree he is not at increased risk for other injury. I think JS can work some magic with Luton and make him a top half Pac-12 QB in his last season. Hopefully while reshirting and polishing up our 4* guy that hopefully stays on board.

Thx for posting what a great read. Love this hire. ecstatic about this hire. How no one had the foresight to see how this would play out is amazing,,, most of us missed exactly what he would bring to the table. It's a huge mountain to climb, but we got the guy to do it. And some real decent pieces in place to play competitive football next year.

Good post Rocky!
"I'm glad to hear Smith say the cupboard of talent isn't bare at Oregon State. Depth is necessary, and immediate help on the defensive line is a must. But there is a young nucleus of players on which Smith's new staff can build".- CJS
That sounds familiar. I'm not gloating, just saying when I talked about there being a solid "core" of players here, I wasn't talking out the other end!
Overall depth and the D line are needing serious help, agreed! I would also say that the O Line needs a true Center along with maybe another utility type (who can play Guard/Tackle if needed).
Was great to hear that Smith recruited and has familiarity with Luton. Also great to hear that there's a connection with D Morris!
As far as Cory Hall. As long as CH is willing to come on board in whatever capacity CJS would like and fit into the new "culture" and of course CJS is ok with it, I have no issues with him staying on staff. You want to have some holdovers or at least one for continuity and to get a feel of some of the players' strengths and weaknesses, personalities, etc!
This hire has grown on me. Don't get me wrong. I loved what Smitty did as a player here, great story, great football mind, etc. There are some things/prospects that I am excited about, like; can he bring a guy like Lubick in as an OC (if he is not promoted at Dub-Which unfortunately I think he will be). Can he poach any recruits from UW? Will a guy like James Allen, coaching HS football in New Orleans, give some love by referring some guys (even some project preferred walk-ons this way)? Louisiana is a recruiting hotbed, as is that whole south region!
I also want to be realistic, not negative. I think we all need to think about not having unrealistic expectations, especially in this next '18 season. It could be another 1 win season or it could improve from there. But I wouldn't expect a bowl game next season. I'm approaching this objectively! Smith gets a few seasons like any other coach (no matter their ties to the University) to show results. I would like to see this team start being competitive next season though. I think the talent should be there (depending on attrition, assts hired, etc).
As always, we'll see?!
Go Beavs!

Luton has a raw DA-esque quality about him. If Smith can work on his ability to read a little quicker and anticipate but also to fix his early release (his overthrow-which is very coachable) then he could fit right in and be a gem! Go Beavs!

When Luton got that injury and until I read that article, I thought that Luton was nuts to play again. But seeing as how a doctor has said there is no risk to further injury, I'll concede that a doctor may know a little more about that subject than I do. Luton has some tools and will be at least a good stop-gap measure for a season. He may even be developed to be a good Pac 12 quarterback with right coaching. Another positive: he has somewhat of a track record for learning a new system quickly. He played one (1) season at Ventura College and walked out of Ventura as the all time season and career passing and td's leader for the school and a JC All-American. I suspect he will put the same effort into learning Smith's system.

My pleasure on posting. Forgive me for typos and for forgetting Luton information. I’m at work and my sausage fingers hate the smart phone 😀
I’m very happy for Luton. I was really worried about that kid.
I’ve been so focused on CJS potential negatives (can you blame me as a Beaver fan?), that I overlooked all of the positives. I’m getting stoked at what he can do. If we get 3 wins next year I’ll be happy.
I like that he talked so much about recruiting. The dude is sharp, he knows what criticisms have been made of him. I’m biased, but I’d trust him to look after my son. Wouldn’t say that about every coach.
Looking forward to this weekend so we can all “chat” about his assistants.
Go niner! Pulling for you bud.

From an article about WSU coaches getting raises this year: The Cougars’ 2017 salary pool for their nine on-field assistant football coaches now totals $2,742,000, an increase of $81,500 from the $2,662,000 they spent in 2016. That is with their DC getting $600K and more in future years.

I could only find information on 2016's salaries for assistants and it doesn't quite match up with that $2.2M number, but here's what the list I have says each university was at for total assistant salaries.
Arizona - $2.8M ASU - $3.25M Cal - $2.65M Colorado - $2.66M Oregon - $3.62M Oregon State - $2.74M UCLA - $3.95M Utah - $3.1M UW - $3.54M Wazzu - $2.66M
Stanford and USC don't report their numbers.

That level of success and we are hearing rumors that the WSU AD is slashing budgets... bad news. Did Bill Moos bolt for Nebraska because he knew of the impending budget crunch?

This is crazy because a lot of Smith's persona reflects the way Mike Riley handled situations. It is exactly like Riley to come in and say that the team isn't that far away. He's going to build them up, treat them with respect.. many of Riley's former players said they admired the man so much that they hated to get crossways with him more than anything. But not because they feared him somehow, it was worse - they felt like they let him down.
Riley's players loved him for his authenticity. I think Jonathan is everything that Riley was - with just a sprinkling of DE's hardass grit.
At this point, this hire is an absolute homerun.
Dear Santa, Gimme Keith as a DC, pillaged from Taggart's staff after he bolted for FSU, Noke at DL and maybe Bray at LB's and I don't need a damn thing else for Christmas.
Thanks, OA
