I think it was inevitable. I actually smiled when it happened.
JS was being interviewed on 620AM this morning. They asked him what he meant in his press conference when he said that he felt OSU is "close". He said (to paraphrase):
"I'm optimistic. I've watched these guys on film. I've seen that are some players running around out there.....<pause>.... and making plays".
The other thing that stuck out to me was they asked him what he would do with the recruits who have already committed. Would he honor all those commitments or would he tell some of them that they would be better off looking elsewhere. He said (to paraphrase):
"If they've committed to this University then we will honor that. But they don't know me and they don't know the direction of the program. So, I will communicate with them and let them know me and the direction and vision we have going forward. If it seems like there is still a fit, from both sides, then hopefully we will get them signed."
I took that to mean that the player has the final say in this. If they've already committed and they (the player) feels like they want to go ahead with it, then OSU will honor it. But he will give the player and the staff a chance to make sure the fit is right.
Mostly what I'm liking about JS so far is that he's really easy to listen to. Know what I mean? He answers the question, with a minimum of coach speak, and doesn't ramble on. I realize that I'm looking at this all through Orange Colored Glasses, but I'm impressed.
Oh, the one other thing... 620AM is the morning show with Nigel Burton. Nigel and JS reminisced a bit about old times. After JS was gone, the other host asked Nigel if he'd gotten or made "that call" yet. I'm pretty sure the guy was asking Nigel if there'd been any discussion of him being on the coaching staff. Nigel either didn't understand the question or avoided it because all he talked about was how he had sent a congratulatory text to JS and how JS must have hundreds and hundreds of them. Overall, I came away with the impression that there has been no real thought on either side that Nigel Burton would end up on JS's staff. Just my reading of things.
Go Beavs!
