The first time I saw our new coach was as a walk on QB in the 1998 spring game. The first half of the scrimmage the offense floundered around with their new JC QB. The second half they brought in their backup walk on who was to small, to slow, and didn't have the arm strength to be a starter. The offense picked up and scored on six straight possessions. I wanted to talk to Riley and tell him there is your starting QB. It took several games an injury and JS throwing for 464 yards and several TD's against the Huskies to make the switch.
When Jonathon Smith walked into the huddle the team got better. Some players have that ability. I had the chance to play with that type of a football player once and know what they can do for a team. I hope that that the ability he showed to lead and improve that team will translate to his ability to lead a team as a coach.
If it does it will be a fun ride over time.

JS will git 'er done in time IMO. How much time? So long as there are no scandals and complete screw-ups, He'll have all the time he needs since I do expect us to do two things right out of the gate, lose more games than we win and at least show up. MR was 2 wins, then 5 before he departed for San Diego. I don't expect any better of a record from JS than that given how far down the hole we have fallen and the toughness of the Pac-12.
Heading into year 3 is when we should see an uptick in the W's and get a chance at bowl eligibility. What could derail JS is injuries. Remember how UCLA saw their QB's drop like flies for several seasons? If he's cursed in that regard, then I hope there's enough understanding of the situation to keep him off the hot seat until he gets the luck to run hot in his favor, which would mean we get the 2000 season kind of deal in short order.
JS strikes me as honest, earnest and truly loving where he has wound up. May Murphy's Law be kept at bay long enough for everyone to see he can actually coach a team as well! He'll bleed Orange and Black for sure.

Don’t spell Jonathan Smith short!! The AD says Coach Smith has GRIT, a great attribute. JS has shown he has an abundance of Grit since walking on at OSU. With just a little luck future generations will look upon Coach Smith as my generation looks upon Dee Andros - One of the greatest Beavers of all time. Coach Andros loved the Marine Corps and Oregon State University. The best gauge of a man's intelligence is by how much he agrees with you. Coach Andros and I - two peas etc.
