Barnes says there will be a massive investment in the salary pool for assistants. I hope this is true and not just an attempt to placate the fan base. I am very happy it was addressed - is he now forced to follow through? Barnes can’t be lying, because even us dumb fans can verify that in the next two weeks as he pulls in a staff. The increase in staff pool was the best news by far imo. CJS had a great press conference. Intelligent and enthusiastic, that guy genuinely has his dream job. I’m drinking one in his honor tonight.

Absolutely - I am much more enthused after watching and listening to CJS. I've watched a few vids of him coaching guys on the field and he just seems to fit the coach mold.

Of course I went into this wanting to be impressed. But I was pretty dubious and was worried that I would end up wishing I had not even watched the thing.
In the end, I was definitely impressed. Glad I watched it.
My #1 reason for being happy is that it seems that JS is authentically authentic. The thing I dislike most about any coach is when they are fake. I hadn't heard anything from JS in a long time and I was concerned that he was going to come out and unleash some sort of manufactured, Dan Hawkins-style "It's Division I football! It ain't intramurals!" rant on us all. I am soooo thankful to hear JS stress real things in a real voice. He is absolutely right that his two coaches at OSU were both authentic, despite the fact that they had wildly differing personalities. The exact personality of a coach does not concern me as much as whether or not they are being real.
The other thing I liked is that JS answered questions as best he could but he didn't ramble. He said what he wanted to say and then just stopped and waited for the next question. It was comfortable. Know what I mean?
I have no idea how this is all going to work out. We need good assistants, good recruiting, some patience, and good luck. We need all of that AND we need JS and his coaches to be great in prep and on game day. I don't know if that will all happen. We can only take one step at a time and I thought today was a good first step.
Go Beavs! Mike '84

That was one steamy press conference. I could not pass that up.

For bringing in a staff: We will be hearing names within the next few days. He wants Low ego, High output. Accountability and performance. "Trying to be authentic" is his style. Brushed off the Former Beavers on staff question, says that being a Beaver is a great foundation for coaches. For recruiting: Hitting the road Sunday or Monday to get to current verbals and also some others. I hope he wears his Fiesta Bowl ring when he's out recruiting.

This statement alone makes me happy, feeling that it will be 180 different than it has been.
Smith said he will be re-recruiting the players on the roster to establish trust.

Hopefully that means Nall, Pierce and Hodgins back... At least on offense I see those three as the key to having any semblance of a functional offense next year...

I just hope JS keeps the read/spread offense and doesn't switch to a pro style or any heavy pass style offense. Over all the press conference was nice, JS is a much more down to earth person than GA.

I'll say this about the presser. I had always told myself he was "just like Helfrich". Boy am I wrong.
So, while I'm not a passenger yet, I'm getting closer and closer to the Hype Train.

There was an article in the Red Guard today where they asked JS if he had a "Slogan", he politey answered no.
But After watching the presser may I suggest his "Slogan" be.... "Go Get It Done!", that was the theme I took from listening to his speech.
I have to admit, JS is my favorite OSU QB, not saying he was the "Best", just my personal favorite to route for. I started off being nervous that this was too early in his coaching career to work but he is winning me over.
Go Get It Done coach!

He single-handedly brought me back to active Beaver fandom on that fateful day at Husky stadium, and then cemented it with the amazing 1998 Civil War. This is very, very weird, having a football coach that I literally _love_. Seriously, I love this guy. Which means that he absolutely cannot, must not fail. I couldn't take it. So, I guess that just means that failure is not an option. End of story. I almost get the feeling that he feels the same way...failure is simply not an option; he wouldn't be here if it was. He has won everywhere he has been, and there's no reason to stop now... No question, I walk with Smitty... GO BEAVS!
