1998 Spring Game. Parker Stadium (Years before Raising Reser).
Terrance Bryant was OSU’s #1 QB. JS was down the depth chart. Not certain but Tyler Tomich might have been the presumptive #2. But on each series JS was at the controls he drove the offense to TD’s while TB seemed to struggle.
I remember thinking that Smith kid has got something. Looks pretty good for a walk-on.
Hard to believe that 19 seasons have come and gone since that Spring Game.
Welcome back Jonathan. Time to confound the doubters one more time.

TB was a hot mess of a QB.
I remember when JS came in for the 2nd half of the UW game in 98. He brought the Beavs back from 28-7 down and nearly won it. OSU had their man there forward!

Who can forget the long throw down field after losing his shoe and the famous/infamous two point try at the end to try and win it in regulation... I was listening to that game on the radio with Darrell Aune and was going absolutely nuts. I recall sinking to the ground when the two point conversion failed.

He lost his shoe in the 2000 game, not the 1998 game.

He set the Husky Stadium passing yardage record that game. We were sitting in the middle of Tyee central, one guy in the row in front of us turned around and said, "The rout is on!" after each Husky score. When the Beavs scored to get within 7 points I tapped the guy on the shoulder and said "The rout is OFF!" The failed 2 point conversion was heartbreaking. All of the Husky fans around us were relieved for the win and hoping the close victory would help them dump their coach (Lambright). The last drive

Who can forget the long throw down field after losing his shoe and the famous/infamous two point try at the end to try and win it in regulation... I was listening to that game on the radio with Darrell Aune and was going absolutely nuts. I recall sinking to the ground when the two point conversion failed. Those were actually 2 different games in Husky Stadium. The first - when JS brought us back as a freshman and threw fit well over 400 yards in the second half was his coming out party. Then Nigel Burton (Nigel, of all people) broke up the 2 point conversion pass at the end or we would have won and ultimately bowl-eligible in Riley’s second season. The shoeless completion to Chad Johnson cane two seasons later in that heart-breaker where Ryan Cesca went wide on the tying field goal. That being our only loss, it was tough to take, but as my son and I left Husky Stadium, the chatter among the UW fans made me giddy. Just a ton of love for our team from them. They knew they were fortunate to win...a far cry from the team that lost 55-3 or something to UW in Parker Stadium just a few years earlier. Incidentally, my experience a there later solidified my lack of respect for Neweasel. A cousin was a running back on that Huskies team. As we grabbed a coke afterwards with him, he told us that his whole team was stunned by how good we were...except Neweasel. He said the coach mocked our team and scolded his players for allowing that crappy team to make it so close. I wonder if he would have felt that way had we played them in December. They were good, but I have no doubt we would have beaten them down the stretch. Coupled with Skippy’s comments about my cousin at a fund-raiser the year before... let’s just say that I wasn’t too impressed.

Pretty sure the lost shoe throw was in 2000 to Chad Johnson.

He lost his shoe in the 2000 game, not the 1998 game. My memory ain't what it used to be and it wasn't that good to begin with.....

That opened my eyes

About the only thing that totally bums me out about this hire is reading Jonathan Smith - 38 years old.

That opened my eyes ha! So true but it was tight. Conversely Johnny would throw some Y A Tittle looking passes but right there and catchable.
