I remember Darnell Robinson saying it was "time to get cracking" before the Fiesta Bowl. Old No. 5 talked a lot, but he backed it up.

The University is doing a good job of publicizing support for the hire, getting quotes from a wide variety of successful and well known Beaver football alumni.

The former teammates aren’t just giving lip-service, they seem genuinely excited and optimistic. Two consistent words I’m hearing: leader and competitor. I think the concern over his personality have been grossly overblown. If guys like Darnell Robinson, Steven Jackson, DA, and James Allen are saying he’s a good leader, that’s all the personality I need.

"Jonathan was a cerebral, intelligent player, and he'll be like that as a head coach," says Allen, now a high school employee and coach in New Orleans. "For us — for us Oregon State Beavers — this is a blessing. This is going to bring a lot of alums back to the program." Exactly the type of thing that has me excited. As I have said, if you have paid attention to Smith since he left, he has been impressive. I am excited that this the massive breath of fresh air OSU football needs. What Smith brings us, is that feeling we all had, starting in 1998, when we went 5-6 and beat the Ducks in double OT. Then Riley left and the home run of all home runs walked in our door. OSU football felt different from 1998 to about 2009. I think Smith brings us back to a program of that mind set. Overachievers. Blue Collar. lunchpail U. Giant Killers.

WOW those are some big time names with some big time praise and expectations. This makes me feel better already.

I liked seeing this from Erickson:
"He's trying to put a coaching staff together," says Erickson, now retired and living in Coeur d'alene, Idaho. It won't include Erickson.
"I want him to do it himself," Erickson says. "It's his time. I had mine. I'll advise him if he asks. I'll do everything I can to help him. I'm certainly going to support the program and be around more. That will be fun."
DE (and even MR) can cast a large shadow (and Riley has already indicated he's moving back to Corvallis). I'd rather they stay in the background and advise if asked...

WOW those are some big time names with some big time praise and expectations. This makes me feel better already. Easy to feel excited after reading that. Message boards are stupid places to talk about yourself, but I'm going to anyway. I lived across the hall from Smith in Callahan when were freshman. Later, I worked for the Barometer as a sports reporter. I was the football beat writer during the Fiesta Bowl run, and the Sports Editor the following year. It would be a stretch to say that Smith was my friend, but (especially back then) I considered him a friendly acquaintance. He's a tremendous individual and an absolute competitor. During the search I was thinking he might not be ready, but big-time players endorsing him on this level is indicative that he deserves a shot. Don't f*** this up Barnes/Ray. Give the him tools, the budget, and the support (anybody) needs to succeed. Practice servant leadership and get the hell out of the way. I have no doubt that the Beavers can be competitive in the modern era of Pac-12 football. I recognize that the mountain is high, and that the climb could be challenging, but I'm stoked to watch Jonathan Smith figure it out. Go Beavs!

I’m even more inclined to love it when guys like Billy are stoked. I think that they are of a similar ilk. Off the field, they are bright and calm and thoughtful. On the field they were assassins. I wouldn’t mind seeing Bill help out a little too. The last time I ran into him, he still looked like he could bull-rush most college O-linemen!

expectations are low. That's Jonathon Smith's biggest advantage right now. The buy-in is very accessible. Get Dukart, get some receivers to catch the ball. Start building. Get a D Coordinator who doesn't just point fingers at his players. (NO SITAKES). Don't make huge promises. Score points, get a positive vibe going, bring in some play makers. Don't be a dIck. I think we can trust JS on that one.

I'm an asshole for saying this, but talk is cheap, and what do you expect them to say? All that same stuff was said about Mark Helfrich by Chip Belly and Oregon players and staff. The proof is in the pudding, talk is cheap, yada yada, you know my refrain by now.

If it was just lip service you’d be hearing this: “Happy for him” “Great guy” “That’s his dream job, good for him” “He was a good teammate” OR you would have players who just refused to comment to a reporter. The praise is EFFUSIVE and they all texted niner per the press conference. The man is beloved by his former mates.
