With the venom/vitriol at the end of Riley and the GA debacle I like this hire because we love JS. If he isn't able to make it happen I believe Beaver Nation will pat him on the back and say thanks for giving it a shot. Barnes was smart to accomplish two things here: Hire someone we have great affection for and calm us down from our (choose a negative emotion), and someone we won't want to hang in effigy at a failed attempt. The hire greatly impacts our collective psyche.

And according to Yve, donors AND former beaver players REALLY wanted niner to get the job. Hard to ignore those two demographics of a fan base. Now hopefully the donors will open up their wallets and help get us out of the graveyard. I'll do my part.

People loved Riley too, but when things started to go south they wanted to run him out of town. Because JS is a popular name and an alum he may get a bit more rope, but when push comes to shove he better win or the fan base will turn on him. That is just the nature of fans and the passion they have for their team.
