Excellent hire from one perspective as of today day, and I do hope it is an excellent hire from all perspectives in the very near future. For today though, Barnes bought time. Barnes knows niner will have the benefit of the doubt. He is a returning hometown hero, and he will not raise hackles nearly as quickly as the ga show did. He naturally has a likable way about him, and the faithful have just as much positive juju for that football season as the 06-07 baseball teams. That team too earns legend status for beaver fans.
i sincerely hope he is given every tool to succeed and some patience as he maneuvers his way ahead. I don't think any other hire would come in with so many good graces already granted him.
There is no reason to think anything other than he will work hard, be sincere and not throw his staff under the bus. He will be innovative and put out a better qb than we have seen in the last three seasons.
And Barnes turned down his own hot seat at least for a season or two. From that point of view he succeeded for now.
Even those that think we came up short will be nothing but supportive of JS.

Agree with most and wonder how far McMaryion could have taken this team with Smith as his HC this year?

Good post. Agree with most and wonder how far McMaryion could have taken this team with Smith as his HC this year? Oh, give it up. You're like a baby with a rattle. Stop. focusing. on the. past. Cool the jets. Cool the jets. On sports message boards people endlessly discuss what if's. It would be one thing if none of us had came out and state repeatedly McMaryion was the best QB on our roster before he was run off, and he then went to FSU and won 9 games and their conference. But we did. We could see he was our best path to victory this year, so NO it will not be soon be forgotten, or forgiven after suffering through the worst season in decades and getting plowed under by our rival who oh by they way McMaryion led us to victory over the year before. This is perhaps one of the biggest blunders in OSU football in my lifetime. I've moved on, but have not forgot.

I actually emailed Ed Ray and Scott Barnes today, strongly urging them to increase the football contribution to 30% of the athletic budget. If niner (or any coach) is going to succeed, they will have the tools they need to help them along. Give niner a competitive P12 budget for recruiting and for assistants PLEASE.

Reunions only last so long, just ask Riley. But for now, yes we are all rooting for you. You take us back to the promised land and you will get Pat Casey treatment.

I do wonder, just a little, if Barnes came in and realized early on that perhaps GA and crew weren't quite the greatest of fits with OSU and Corvallis and this hire may have been influenced with that to some extent. You couldn't pick a better "fit" than Jonathan as fas as "the person" goes.

From that point of view he succeeded for now. Even those that think we came up short will be nothing but supportive of JS. Excellent analysis. If true, it could even explain Barnes bringing in Niner *instead* of landing a high-profile hire. This hire actually buys Barnes the most time possible - likely even more than the return of St. Dennis or MR, because as proven coaches who had previously established 10 and 11 win high bars, there would be expectations. By my analysis, either we will be congratulating ourselves for a Scott Rueck-like hire (NOTE - Scott had won a "natty" at a lower level, so not comparing resumes, but the notion of a candidate that likely wouldn't land a non-OSU P5 gig landing ours), OR things will be really uncomfortable for Barnes after ~5 years of losing (though we don't seem to keep many ADs that long). If you go look at the "new coach hired!" collateral at the OSU Beavers web site, this does not have a hasty feel about it. All the quotes, video, etc..... I have a feeling this could be a really good hire. If Nebraska hires Scott Frost, we can also see if our parallels to Nebraska continue into the future. Go Beavers!
