1st none of us now if this a good, great or bad hire. Time will tell. But I for one em all in! I support Barnes for bringing a Beav great back. I support him for taking heat and quietly staying the coarse. I support Coach Smith & the staff that he will hire. I support the players. I feel Beav nation has been so hard with Rileys last couple years and Garry Avezzano train wreck. Lots of were valid 2. But I for one, em sick of being negative. I'm excited about OSU football! We have one of our own. Ex players are excited. We all will have plenty of time to see the results & judge them on those merits. It's been 2 long for all of to be excited & all of us agree on this board our love for OSU. But today..... let's all embrace it and remember it's a great day to be a Beaver!!!!

Some positives of the timing for this hire are the fact that expectations are now back to 1996 levels. Given Smith is one of our own he'll have some built in slack to begin with, coupled with the lower expectations he has a real chance with some modest improvements to generate some real momentum and excitement in the locker room and with the fan base. My biggest question is, will he wear cowboy boots on the sideline? I hope so, will help with recruiting Texas. Get a pair made out of genuine gator and expand into Louisiana and Florida too. 9'ers back Go Beavs!!!

One really positive thing is all the past player support right out of the gate. Smith was a central figure, a 4 years starter in our Golden Era, and interacted and connected with a huge number of players from a huge sweeping era of Oregon State. Players from 1996 to 2004 or more had oppourtunity to spend two or more years around Smith. And they are congratulating this. Derek Andersen, Tim Euhus, Steven Jackson and Ken Simonton have all applauded the move. Euhus going as far as to tweet he is going to buy more tickets next year. A lot of people have faith he is gonna fix this thing. I have faith too.

We owe it to JS to give him our full support and a chance, regardless of whether he was our personal favorite or not. Let's go Coach Smith!

OSU Marketing is already at full steam pushing the "Return of Coach Smith" angle. And I love it. Enjoy the feel good while we have it. It was reported that Smith always talked about coming back and coach at OSU when he played there. This is literally a dream come true for him. Lets absolutely support that!

1st none of us now if this a good, great or bad hire. Time will tell. ...... But today..... let's all embrace it and remember it's a great day to be a Beaver!!!! Exactly right. What I've learned over the years is that it really doesn't matter I if think a hire is good or bad. Partially this is because I've learned that I'm not capable of telling the future. I thought DE was a bad hire when we got him. I thought GA was a good hire. With that track record, why would I go out of my way to let the world know what I think of this one? The other reason that it really doesn't matter if I think it's a good or bad hire is because I'm not the type of fan who is going to cut my donation just because I'm pissed off or dubious about a coaching hire. OSU needs my donation and my ticket purchase no matter what. The other reason it doesn't matter if I think it's a good or bad hire is that I'm going to stay positive on the message boards. Why spend hours dragging down the coach, whoever he is, when the only thing that can come from that is to make fans less likely to be supportive, less likely to donate, and less likely to attend games? And the final reason it doesn't matter if I think it's a good or bad hire is that nothing will ultimately matter other than if they can win games. At this point, we can focus on having fun with talking about coordinators and tracking recruiting and enjoying the honeymoon. For now, we'll just assume the wins will follow. Why assume anything else? Go Beavs! Mike '84

He totally has mine. In fact, there has been a surge of excitement for me that has built steadily since I first heard about this and expressed my initial feelings of surprise and even disappointment. Like everyone else, I had a sense of who I thought should get this job, and it didn’t matter to me whether or not said candidates wanted to be here. Niner just wasn’t on my short list.
What’s fun is to take a step back after you realize that the coach has been selected, and my personal preference didn’t mean squat (never did). It didn’t take long for me to move from my jilted mindset to start thinking about the positive possibilities. As many have said, nobody has a crystal ball. We are incapable of divining Smith’s future here, but it’s kind of exciting to have a fresh young coach coming in. Add to that who the coach is - a beloved part of some our best football ever at OSU, and the hope of possibly bringing in guys like Heyward-Johnson and Trent Brayvto toughen us up and recruit the heck out it.
I don’t expect magic, but this is kind of cool.

It is impressive that past players seem to be in for Smith. I'll add the Yvenson Bernard has expressed his support, as well.

I'm one of the guys who expressed early on that this was probably a bad for for Jonathan as well as the school... but now I'm getting pretty darned excited!!! This is going to be and exciting offseason.
For as much as I'm on here nowadays, I should just break down and make Benny's House my computer's home page.
