It doesn’t appear there is much Oregon State’s Mikayla Pivec can’t do on the basketball court. Pivec burst on the scene as a freshman last season and averaged 7.5 points and 5.0 rebounds while starting 27 games for the Beavers and making the Pac-12's all-freshman team. While Pivec has taken on an extended role and is learning a new position this season, the numbers have only gotten better. So has her impact on the 19th-ranked Beavers. Pivec has started the first five games of the season at the point guard spot — taking over for four-year starter Sydney Wiese. GT Article

She is so fun to watch - always under control and in control. This is the sign of a very confident and finely tuned athlete. I noticed, early on, that if she makes a mistake ( rare ), she immediately atones for it with a defensive stop, rebound or an offensive highlight ( usually an amazing pass or a key basket). The part that is amazing is that she is smart enough to put herself in that position in almost every case. There are nine other players on the floor, but she knows what she has to do, and nobody is going to stop her. I have said, repeatedly, that she will end up being our best player ever...( obviously not considering future Rueck recruiting gems ). Those of you that do not watch the women play, give yourself a treat. Watch a broadcast, stream or better yet...a game in person. They actually run plays, they hit their shots, they actually make their free throws... this is one, well oiled machine. The play is always consistent and at a high level. The men ( I don't care who you are talking about, are playing more 'freestyle' and do a lot of one on one - clearly not as well drawn up, or executed ). Seems they are all auditioning for the NBA.

The self-appointed truth monitors of this board will jump all over you when you say so-and-so will be the best player ever. Like when I predicted the same label for Destiny Slocum! She might be the best player so far this century, but they're going to go back to ancient history and cite bigs who had 50 points and 50 rebounds per game, or something like that. (And as good as Pivec is, Slocum may end up being better and overshadow Pivec. And who knows, maybe Morris or Aquino will finally win an enduring title of "best ever". I love to think about those 4 players on the floor at the same time....)

It appears the men "actually make their free throws" too, at a much-higher percentage: OSU men .748 (110-147), OSU women .617 (37-60).

Let's look at ALL of the numbers at the end of the season. Right now, I see Tinkle and Eubanks hitting their free throws. Let's see what happens at crunch time. I will bet the women win by a wide margin ( if they can keep Grymek off the line) But, I get your point and hope they both do well enough to close out the tight contests.

Drew faded after the league games began, but seem to be a bit more fluid this year. Also... tons of minutes last year wore on him. As I've and others have mentioned, my issue with the women is the inside play/depth. Only 60 attempts is not nearly enough. The ladies will make 68-73% but need to get to the line much more. Right now OSU is too perimeter oriented... and really it is by "need" as we are really inexperienced inside. As the season wears on I can see a tumble to 4th or 5th in Pac12 play if the inside play does not improve and become a honest threat (besides Marie). This team will have some outstanding nights from deep, but can't "live" there. I was totally surprised by last year's team and ability to win 32. But, this year Syd is not the biggest loss in terms of team need. Our 'bigs' need to grow up and contribute here in the last half of pre-season to have a chance to be in the top 3... IMHO

UCLA and Oregon will almost certainly be the top 2 teams. But below those 2, our main competition is with Cal and Stanford, and I think we can at least split games with them. We're not going to repeat as Pac-12 champs this year, for sure.

With KtMac getting 8 rebounds and getting some mid range shots I wonder if coach is going to move her to more of a forward and bring in AG more to run Point. And I think two close loses to ranked teams isn't taking OSU out of the PAC champ picture. I see them in the thick of it.

KtM did play some high post last year. I've been thinking the same thing about moving her to the 4. While I personally like the idea of playing AG at point, we could also continue to use Mik there and play TC at the 2.
