Avery was an easy call. From everything I have read, Avery was a bad guy. Benton is a much more nuanced case. I can see renaming all of the Bentons based upon his treatment of Native Americans. But Benton was almost killed fighting against the pro-slavery camp in his party and did wreck his political career fighting against the pro-slavery camp. I guess that the good that he did (or at least tried to do) at the end of his life was outweighed by the evil that he did when he was a younger man? No redemption I guess. What is the message there, exactly? Oh well. I am glad about Gill, but it is annoying that it came this far. I am also annoyed by the idea that it is still Benton County, but Benton's name is being scrubbed on campus.
