Positives:
-Alfred Hollin: What a 2nd half. 12 points, 8 rebounds, played hard and drew fouls. Looked like he belongs and looked like the athletic threat that we heard about when he signed.
-Generally solid defense: Holding a team to less than 50 points is always good. I thought guys were getting hands up and closing out on shooters much better, and it helped that Marist wasn't hitting the open looks they did get most of the night. Nevertheless, they shot 33% from the floor and only 18.5% from deep, so a marked improvement in that department.
-Rebounding: As they should have, they out-rebounded Marist by a significant margin, 44-25. I thought guys screened out well and lots of guys got involved on the boards too. Ethan had 9, Hollins had 8, G and Tres both had 7 and Drew had 6.
-2nd half adjustments: After a rough go of it in the first half they clamped down on D, took care of the ball better on O, took smarter shots and were much more efficient in the 2nd half.
-FT Shooting: 80% on the game, and 2 of the 3 misses were in mop up time with the game in hand. If these guys can consistently make their FTs that might be the first time we can say that about an OSU team in what seems like a long time.
Negatives:
-Turnovers, turnovers, turnovers: 16 on the game, and they tended to come in bunches. This team has to learn how to take care of the ball better, and as has been said countless times on this board already this year, PG play is paramount. JRoc didn't play much today and the Thompsons took PG responsibility more often than not but they still need to take care of the ball much better, especially in Pac-12 play.
-FG and 3Pt Shooting: This team for whatever reason still continues to struggle to shoot the ball. I look at this roster and I see guys who "should" be good shooters and who take what should be good shots, but time and time again they can't knock them down. Tres had a good night from deep but struggled otherwise, and Hollins and Drew were efficient but the rest of the offense still struggles to find consistency from anywhere outside of 3 feet. If this team could knock down their open looks that 3-3 record looks a lot better than it does right now.
Bottom Line:
A decent win against a team we should beat comfortably. The effort level was there, but wasn't the kind of dominating performance I was hoping to see out of the squad. Good to see the team finish off the game and continue to build the lead into the final minute, but will still need to clean up their play in the next few games before the real schedule begins. Go Beavs!
