Though the train wreck has stopped, fires are still smoldering and a few train cars are leaning over a huge chasm, threatening to bring more cars with them.
What went wrong is due to a number of factors causing the "Great Storm". Maybe I will put something together on this.
Worst season in OSU football history.
Probably worst defensive output ever.
Lone win was against a winless Portland State team.
Looking back on the Portland State team all the signs were there that this team would end in an epic fail. Being the diehard Beaver fan, I kept watching and hoping that they would find some mojo to win a game.
My opinion is there may be some good players on this team, but how many of them (just like apples) have been spoiled by the negativity and turmoil this season became.
One of the issues facing OSU is money (but we are not the only Pac-12 team). OSU is at a crossroads. A. Decide to fund the football team at a significantly higher percentage of the overall athletic budget. or B. toss in the towel choose an economical route.
A. Means women sports will get significant less funding. Sports like gymnastics, softball, CC, track and others. Maybe even kill one of them and bring on another Womens sport that cost less. Would we be willing spend proportionately less on some men's sports.
B. Most of the funding for the athletic department comes from PAC-12 TV revenue. We chose to not be competitive in football and just suck funds to have athletics. Have three out of conference away body bag games. Teams like Michigan, OSU, Bama, Penn State, etc. will pay about $1M to 1.5M to play an also ran P5 school that will travel.
There is no in-between here. We will know shortly here which direction this Athletic Department is heading by how much we pay our HC AND his assistants. GA made between $2-3 M. New HC needs to be greater than $3M/year base and going up from there. Assistants should be $700K base with bonus potential.
Hate GA all you want, but he gave us a $12M boost. We need to take advantage of that and make changes.
Lastly, look at any good sports franchise. Good organizations have more to do with what is going on above the HC. Examples: Patriots, Packers, Steelers, Spurs, there are others but can't think of them off the top of my head. This means Ed Ray has to publicly state that HE is going to put the priority on improving the Football program. Scott Barnes needs to lay-out a plan that meets Ed Rays goals, Stadium completion, facilities, support personnel etc. that will put us on par with other programs (as a percentage of athletic department budget.
Those with season tickets will know in a couple of weeks whether it makes sense to renew.
