serious, they'll bring in the right guy. The "right guy", may be different in some of our opinions but the excuse that we "can't" bring in the right guy for ? reason(s), is not acceptable. Some people think that we have to settle for certain coaches which I disagree with. Again, it's a cop out. Find the right guy, negotiate and make a deal.
Here's what I think the next regime needs to be able to do, to save this sinking ship:
Recruiting: Get the best Oregon HS kids to stay here. Find some preferred walk-on gems (ala; Mike Hass, Slade Norris) as well within the state. Preferred Walk-ons are low risk and can yield high reward at times. I think some of these guys get overlooked because of the area's stigma (Oregon) of not being a National recruiting powerhouse and coaches focus so much on the top states. And skills like; work ethic, maturity, football IQ and some talent, can go a long ways. Creating connections with local HS coaches is very important, especially when it plants a seed for future stars who come out of those high schools and there is a connection established from previous recruits! I know this first hand, having been coaching at the HS level.
Also need to gain players from at least 2 of the big 3 (Texas, Cali and/or Florida), to compete in the PAC 12. Again, connections, very important! I would also argue that a Poly (Hawaii, other islands) connection, even if it's small to start, would be extremely positive!
The JUCO market will need to be hit immediately! Need some key positions to be filled; CB, L, DL are immediate needs.
Current Players: With the effort in that last CW, keep the best guys...only if they are effort guys as well. The lazy/pretenders need to play somewhere else. Negative mindsets are cancerous!
Current Coaches: Unfortunately, I do think they need to retain one guy from this staff. Right now, Lockette would be great because I think he might keep a guy like Art Pierce here plus he has major Florida connections. He would also be able to deliver some insight on players who stay behind; attitudes, motivational help, strengths/weaknesses, etc.
New Staff: Know the conference! Scout the hell out of the conference! The last regime seemed shocked and quite thrown off in their first year in the PAC 12. Have a plan and stick with it. Changing too much, shows lack of confidence and knowledge of what you want to do. Build with the basics from technique to scheme, set the foundation. It comes down to doing what you do best and doing that better than anyone else. You don't have to do a hundred different things and do them sub par! Care about all phases of the game (O, D and S Teams) equally! Our special teams were horrific along with everything else but you could tell there was no imagination and a lot of basic break downs in both return games and the punt and kicking game. Lastly, have fun, play loose! The best football we saw (even though it was against some down opponents) was laid back and fun football. Guys weren't worried about screwing up (*see build with basics/what you do best) all of the scheme and things that are being installed that week!
These are my opinions from coaching experience and also my observations as a Beaver fan. there are those who will disagree and that's cool. There's more than one way to skin a cat.
Go Beavs!
