A few Beavers might have reached the end of a life long dream. Free agency after 4-5 years of low to mid minor ball, hitting in the very low .200s probably means the end. Hopefully a few will sign with a new club and get another shot. If not, they have done what many just dream of: Getting a paycheck for playing the game.
The unkindest cut of all. Hurts.
I didn't list the names. Check the Beavers in the Pros. if interested.

Many of the best NCAA players will never make it far in the pros. 99.99% of people are not cut out to hit 95 MPH pitches consistently, nor can throw 95 MPH consistently. Some guys you expect to get cut will stick around, and some guys you expect to continue on will get cut - many times for reasons you don't see on a stat sheet. Such is the everlasting cycle of pro baseball.

Such is the everlasting cycle of pro baseball. I guess to most it is just a cycle. But when it's your cycle it's a bit more personal. From "signing" to getting really, really close to the top, it's hard to face reality. Regardless of how well you do in your next venture, you never forget what you almost achieved in BB. If the Devil really purchased souls in exchange for a few years in the Bigs, he would have more sellers than he could shake a pitch fork at.

A bit off topic, because the thread is about players facing the ‘end’ without making it to MLB - but it’s possible (or even likely) that one who did make it, may be looking at an ‘end’. Blue Jays aquired a younger (cheaper) version of Darwin Barney in Gift Ngoepe from the Pirates. First player ever from the African continent to play MLB. Darwin is currently a free agent.

Too bad. I did not know that. I know it's always been Good Field - No Hit = no job, but I thought the Blue Jays seen the value in a guy that can play any infield or outfield position and play it well. I guess not. My opinion, The Cubs should have kept a Gold Glove and fan favorite player. For whatever reason the Dodgers had no interest. Unfortunate for Old Barn. Orange glasses or not, I enjoyed following a pretty good Beaver's career. Good on ya DB, you done well.

Being a free agent with Darwin's experience does not necessarily mean the end. There are 29 other teams. Signing someone like him, who can play several positions, can open up a slot for an extra pitcher on the roster.

Some almost all of us lack the talent and athletic ability fixed. And I'm only including people who actually played baseball.

Signing someone like him, who can play several positions, can open up a slot for an extra pitcher on the roster. Thanks for pointing that out. Myself and the post above mine only infer that it's possibly or likely to be over, not absolutely positively without a doubt over. I'm sure most certainly hope he plays another 10 + years including 4-5 All Star games. DB for sure deserves a spot in the best ever Beaver Hall of Fame. I don't recall for sure what his last contract was for. I think it was 2. something for two years. If so, that would mean he's due about another mill that a new team would most likely be paying. Another post stated that the New Blue Jay was making less than DB and was younger. So - ? It has always amazed me how many teams throw millions at older, big name players who seldom produce. Then they are tight as a tick with the lower tier players who give them a good value for what they are paid. The 2nd base guy that the Dodgers kept instead of Barney is a good example. I can't remember his name and won't waste the time to look it up. The NFL is the same. The Dolphins signed Cutler for a guaranteed 10. for one year. M. Moore, who in my opinion is a better QB, gets less than 2. But, they have the millions and I don't. Obviously, that makes them much smarter than me.

It’s got to be tough to stay positive after bouncing for so many years on the rubber chicken circuit - every year watching another young phenom join the organization trying to steal that dream from you.

You play until folks quit paying you to play. Save/invest what you can and move on to a real job. 99.99999% of us never got to chase that dream.
