They did prove they could possibly be as good as last year’s team. They didn’t even play the cleanest of games and STILL had a chance to win...up until they couldn’t secure that last rebound. But to be a sweet 16 caliber team someone has to learn to SCREEN OUT. They go for the boards, but not enough players actually block someone out. So too many shots turned into 50/50 balls. Despite our clear size advantage we allowed 21 offensive rebounds and overall lost the rebounding battle 47-36.
Still....a lot to be proud of and a lot to look forward to

That and the way they were able to finish at and around the rim was the difference IMHO. Hopefully we can learn to clean that up!

I just see a very bright future with this team. Yes, we lost but to a very good team. However the upside is tremendous and we have one of the best women coaches in the country. Hold evaluation until mid-season when we have had time for the team to devleop. I am guessing you will see a team no one wants to play in the ncaas.

I decided to look up all the ND players and see what kind of recruiting rankings they had when they joined the team. hope this turns out legible to read. We just need to develop the other bigs on this squad to her level.

Young blew by Maddie several times to go to the hoop. Katie Mac pretty much doesn't get scored on so far as I've seen. I hope coach gives her a chance to be the head hunter that Gabby was last year.
Gyrmek needs to be told that when those cute little guards want the rebound she needs to say NO! MINE!! I think her main problem is that she's losing track of where she is in relation to the basket. Playing time should take care of that and then it's going to be funsville.
Is Mik gassing out too much? Maybe the power work outs for the Jav is working against her staying full throttle at the end of the game?
We need someone other than Mik to drive to the basket to open up the perimeter and draw fouls. I nominate Taya. For a tall gal she has a smooth dribble and has been good at it the few times I've seen her go for it.
I don't want it to seem like I'm anti Maddie. She goes all out all the time and that helps make good things happen.
Rebounding for OSU has always been a team affair. Here's to them getting that back together.
Some thoughts on a great learning opportunity.

With Mik getting experience playing PG this season, the rotation possibilities next season (and the season after) are intriguing.

That was a great game. Nothing to get too concerned about. I'd say there were more positive take away's than negatives. Oregon State had 17 assists Notre Dame had 8. Jackie Young basically took the game over in the 2nd half. You could argue OSU coulda/shoulda done a better job keeping the ball out of her hands but there's not too many D1 women's basketball teams that are going to stop a 6-0 super athletic LEFTY from getting to the hoop. That's a skill set you don't see very often. Just like when we lost to Marquette last year, this game displayed to me that OSU will be right in the thick of things again for the Pac-12 title.

I saw a lot of real positives. I was scared when Jo came in - we've seen the little girls from the mid-majors harass her to distraction, and I really feared that ND's top-tier talent would just victimize her. But she did fine. Scott felt good enough about her to try her down the stretch in the "Twin Tower" mode with Marie.
Maddie was night-and-day better than she was in our first game.
I was really impressed with Janessa. The little that we saw of her last year - hobbled as she was - made me wonder whether she was destined to be a bust. In her first games this year we saw some good D, but against smaller teams. Sunday we saw some excellent D against outstanding competition, a helluva lot of energy off the bench, and even a bit of offense. If she gets some confidence on her offensive game, she'll be good. As she is right now, she'll be a good contributor off the bench as a smart and strong defender who can relieve the 4 or 5 spot. I would have liked to see whether she could have slowed down Young - no one else could, but I wonder if Janessa's strength and deceptively long reach might have changed a few shots.
My only disappointment at that position is that Taya is still pretty lost. I still believe that this team goes exactly as far as the 4-spot will take us. If we are to four-peat, either Maddie needs to continue to develop and get one or two notches better or Taya needs to figure out how Scott's system works. I'll accept either solution.

I was encouraged by how the Beavs competed yesterday. The game was there for the taking during the last three minutes after Kat Tudor gave the team a 65-64 lead with her fourth three-pointer of the game with 2:53 remaining in the fourth quarter. Once again, it was a great Beaver Nation atmosphere with 7,570 as the announced attendance. 6'3" Taylor Jones, the #23-ranked Class of 2019 recruit in the country from Forney, Texas, was in the stands along with her family. I would think that Taylor liked what she saw with respect to the fan support at Gill Coliseum yesterday. Video highlights of a fun day in Corvallis are accessible below. www.espn.com/high-school/girls-basketball/recruiting/player/news/_/id/221002

I tend to agree. It was a great game, and for this edition of the Beavers to be right in the thick of it down to the waning minutes of the game this early in the season to #6 is encouraging. That said, there are a couple of concerns: = We got out rebounded by a wide margin (both offensive and defensive) - not surprising, that usually is an indicator of W-L - but either the good news or bad news is that many rebounds we had a chance at (in some cases they were in our grasp), we just didn't secure them. Since this is game 3, I think the matter is correctable. = We need more production at the forward position - between Maddie, Taya and Janessa we were 2-8 on FG, 1-4 on 3pt, 5 rebounds and no FTs attempted [so no drives resulting in fouls]. All of this in 39 cumulative minutes of play. That said, I actually was heartened by how much better Janessa looked in this game, activity wise. We will be a fairly potent team this year, and the next couple of years (add in super quick guards and some top shelf tall timber) we could be scary good. Go Beavers!
