His kid played for Jones, he knows what went on at SMU, Jones' leaving ended the prospect of playing time for this kid, yet he still thinks very highly of Jones. That says a lot more to me than a bunch of speculations by us internet sport fans. Everything I heard about Jones while I was living in Hawaii was about a man who handled himself with class, even as he left for SMU. I'm not saying Jones is our only choice, I'm saying he'd be a good one. What amazed me, listening to the podcast that was linked, is just how positive a guy Jones is (or at least portrays himself to be). From how our current kids are accepting coach Hall, that could be a very important piece in the hiring right now. His post would have carried more weight if he had stated that, but without knowing the specifics I personally think it came off as over the top. He stated that in earlier postings, maybe not as directly. Interesting thing is, his kid is looking at transferring in this winter and still has a year of eligibility. It would be cool if the kid got to play no matter who gets hired. Good story..2.5 games as a senior in high school, gets injured but still gets recruited by a lot of schools. Multiple injuries and two or three teams later and still chasing the dream. I kinda admire Grumpy for standing by his kid, and Jones for that matter.

Jones might be the best candidate of them all...at least of the ones who will come to Oregon State.
That's going to be a big problem...every year, plenty of programs boot their coaches, or coaches retire or quit, and every year, there is fierce competition to hire the best ones out there.
Fierce competition = lots of money. We've just seen a pretty big thread on how much Teford makes...close to $2.4 million this year with his incentives. That's pretty close to what the guy from Utah made this year, isn't it? That means that we are competing with the likes of the Mountain West for coaches' salaries. Most of the Power 5 will be able to outspend us by greater than $1 million per year, I'd imagine.
That is going to narrow the list of candidates who will come here. Tedford might be out of reach. I bet Norvell is out of reach. In fact, most of the guys who are worth looking at in the Group of 5 teams will be out of reach.
I'm guessing that Miles is out of reach.
That leaves us with guys like Jones. He might be the best we can get.

I think it's cool that his son has had the opportunity to play big time college football. It's awesome! I still don't think JJ is the best candidate though. If others including Grumpy disagree, great! It's a free country. I wish for nothing more than a possible scenario of the Beavers hiring JJ, me not being thrilled, JJ turning the program around overnight, go to the Rose Bowl, and you and Grumpy make fun of me every day in this forum! Bring it on!
