For you hiring experts, the job posting notes an official closing date of 12/1, with a full consideration date of 11/20. jobs.oregonstate.edu/postings/51920My question is, can OS hire the coach prior to the closing date? Do they need to wait until at least 11/20 before interviewing candidates? Kind of surprised there haven’t been more rumors, outside of Les Miles’ interest, Neuweasels’s interest, and potential sittings of Les Miles in Corvallis a few weeks ago...

No Osu can not hire someone before 11/20
I don't think OSU employees can even talk to candidates before then per Oregon hiring laws, hence the search firm

I saw a bachelor's degree is required. I guess that rules out Chad Johnson, darn.

No Osu can not hire someone before 11/20 I don't think OSU employees can even talk to candidates before then per Oregon hiring laws, hence the search firm Thank you for the clarification. A search firm allows reporters like Dodd to post statements like this: Follow up question: how soon AFTER 11/20 can a coach be announced? Is there a mandatory time set aside for interviews? With signing on 12/20, I’d like a coach signed by Thanksgiving weekend...

I am currently going through the joys of a government recruitment. My understanding is they produce a list of applicants from the announcement and that once that list is produced, they are free to conduct interviews and hire someone as quickly as they want. That said most employers will run background checks, maybe the search firm is doing this now, which could delay it further.

That said most employers will run background checks, maybe the search firm is doing this now, which could delay it further. I work for the State of Oregon and have hired a few times. Heck, we are doing it now. The hiring manager does not even see the list of applicants until after the closing date on typical recruitment. More over, the hiring manager never even sees the full list. They only get the applicants that pass the initial screening of basic requirements. PRO TIP: if you want a state job, make damn sure you click the buttons that say you have the minimum requirements on the supplemental questions! From there, yeah it is pretty much up to the hiring manager to push the process. i have seen it as fast as a week, because we were racing to beat a hiring freeze, and I have seen it take months. The general process is resume review to get your top 5-10. Phone interviews to get your top 3, in person interview to get your person. Of course that is squishy depending on the particular recruitment. I work in a research unit, so we give tests and ask for work samples and things like that to make sure you have skills necessary to do the job. And yes, as somebody has mentioned, ALL hiring is confidential. If OSU were to comment on it, they would be breaking the law. If OSU said, yes they contacted Les Miles, they would be in big trouble with BOLI, in the minimum.

There is no legal reason they cannot hire before the closing date. However, public relations wise, they would be wise to leave it open the original decided time frame so no one interested feels like they got cut off and not considered.

Also I think that we are in no hurry; it's just a little over a week out till the deadline. My bet is that they have their choice narrowed down anyway. We should know soon.
