Ok..here goes. Was good to see the mat men out there again. 7 months is a long time.
149 - Tobin came out on fire and workman like vs Rich. He looked really good. Mode kept the pressure on and adding point vs Noonan. Mode is a bit taller and pretty good on top. Used several tilts from top to get his points vs Tobin. A good mix of kids here, should be a solid weight for the Beavs
133 - Probably the best match of the night. Caulkins had it won up until the last :15 seconds. Turner locked up Caulkins hands and reversed with back points at the very end to get the W. Both were cautious the 1st 5 mins. Not wanting to make a mistake. I expect more battles between these two
141 - all Hathaway, as it should be. No surprises. Lighter Willits will fill this spot nicely next season
157 - Hunter Willits looked very good. Good on his feet, good riding and tilting. Once he finally broke through Williams defense there was no looking back. Easily the most impressive performance by a freshman. He could and should start right away IMO. Some good tournaments and wins under his belt and he could find himself in the rankings
165 - Olmos looked solid out there. Scored when he got in deep on McKee. He kind of coasted/gassed a bit in the 3rd period. He looks the part, has a good build and should be an asset for us at this 'black hole' weight for the Beavs over the years.
174 - Younger Terry over Dematteo fairly easily. Terry owned the neutral position with many take downs from standing. Some were unorthodox, or funky. Couldn't ride D. as he escaped easily. Was told Doyle was dinged up, that's why he didn't go. Assume he is the best guy at this spot. Will have to wait for Thursday and Sunday (Mike Clock) to see what happens at this weight for Beavs.
184 - McLeod v Coleman. Coleman a bulked up from 74 last season. 2 starters from LY going at it. Fairly even. McLeod won from the mat position. Full ride out when he was on top, and a fairly easy escape point. Both very even on their feet. Coleman could take a RS as McLeod appears to be the man.
197 - Greigo with a 2nd period fall. Not much else to say. Hope he can take the next step this season and get a serious look at the podium in Cleveland.
285 - Crawford and Parazoo surprisingly even on their feet. Cody with a TD, then a little sloppy where Parzoo reversed him. An escape, Riding Time and Stall calls were the rest of his points. Cody will be the man here until Dhesi is back and can challenge for the spot....I'm not holding my breath on that one.
Overall solid in all weights once we get a couple guys healthy. No 'holes' that I can see. I like the fact most of the newcomers or younger guys won their matches. That means the incoming class upgraded the room and program.
Go Beavs!
