As die hard Beaver fans I believe that we all have a fair amount of anxiety over the possibility that a poor choice will be made as the next head coach. Not surprising considering the history of coaching selections over the many past years.
OSU also seems to be going through A.D's at the same rapid pace and with about as much success.
Somehow, someway we have to have a Coach and A.D. who care and value Oregon State Athletics.
Clearly the lack of success at achieving this in the past leads to much fear and angst about the chances of it occurring in the future.
I personally would rather try and fail with a coach who has deep Oregon State roots than hire the latest "hot item" coach who if he did manage to win here would be gone in a flash!
Go Beavers!

Unfortunately that is the thought process that put our basketball program in the crapper.

BDC was our AD for 13/14 years and he was here in the department for 4 years before that. We did lose 1 AD to his Alma Matter rather quickly. Doesn't sound like we really are churning through the ADs to me.
As far as coaches with deep OSU ties for the football team goes, that really limits our options. As pointed out earlier, hiring Jimmy Anderson was a great feel good event, and a perfect example of deep ties, while he really did not do poorly, it did kinda act as a bridge to mediocrity for our basketball program.

Go Beavers! Alabama thought that for a long time. Then they hired Satan. Hire the best no matter what. So what if they leave after 4 years. It would mean that they have succeeded greatly, all the better for us and easier to hire a top shelf coach than before.

Well thought out points. I would counter with this thought- I believe that our last three best coaches have been Pat Casey, Mike Riley, and Scott Rueck. All three had deep, deep Beaver roots.
You say "Hire the best". Just how do you define the "best" for Oregon State?. From my example above, I would say the evidence clearly shows the "best" for Oregon State meet my criteria of a deep commitment to and caring for Oregon State.
This is obviously not a discussion that has a right or wrong answer. However maybe some of the past mistakes can be avoided in the future by looking at what has worked and what has not.
Thank you all for your participation!

Is there a candidate out there with "deep Oregon State roots"? Riley didn't build much of a coaching tree, and Erickson didn't put down much in the way of roots.

In response to above comments, I believe Mike Riley's father was an OSU coach or coached in Oregon and that Mike grew up in Corvallis. Also, the writer above is correct that Pat Casey was not OSU per se but he was very much a state of Oregon guy.
It just seems to me that OSU must stop trying to "keep up with the fat cats of the college football world by trying to do what they do only with less resources and less advantages (location, weather, etc,)
