I'm torn on what to think about this group (Francois, Tufaga, Bickler, Dawkins)
Two are in-state (good!), but up until they signed I had never heard of either of them (bad!)
Cory Hall is getting guys to commit (good!), but they're committing over Nevada, UNLV, Weber State, Hawaii..... (bad!)
These guys are committing even though they have no clue who the next coach will be (good!), but they haven't signed anything and probably won't until they know who the next coach will be (bad!)
If they do sign without knowing who the coach will be, they either love the school (good!) or know that no other P5 offer will ever come (bad!)
Such a conflicting time as a Beaver fan. No certainty on anything.
Other than I'm certain we're better off without Gary Andersen.

I agree with your sentiment.
When you gamble on future projected ability on recruits, I definitely think for many reasons, it is best to do it with in state kids. I like to see them take risks on potential with in state kids. You can evaluate them better due to proximity, the recruit is more vested in the state they are from, fans relate to local players better, and it builds relationships for better recruiting of higher ranked recruits.

I never worried about the "doesn't have other (good) offers" when Riley was here, because he had a proven track record of picking up lightly recruited guys who turned out to be legit NFL talents. (K Lewis, B Hughes, V Butler, J Poyer, S Stroughter, etc). It's a bit harder to give the benefit of the doubt to coaches who don't have that kind of history.

That's a good point, kersting13. I think some times people confuse "good recruiter" with "guy who connects with players and is able to convince guys to come to (insert school here.)" Andersen was seen as a great recruiter before he got here, but if Nemec is to be believed, his entire recruiting process was a freaking mess. Still we all heard about how recruits loved his direct approach and the way he spoke to them. Are you a good recruiter if you convince some kid who maybe isn't fully interested in coming to OSU to come, or are you a good recruiter if you can find a kid that fits your system that other people are overlooking?

This is a great conversation... I believe it is both. I'd say evaluate the talent is first, then the ability to "Sell" the program and the school to close the deal. I'm of the mindset that any legit D 1 talent recruit right now is good. Keep some momentum going. It is also football, you need lot of bodies and depth. I hope I'm wrong but being realistic, we have seen how some players leave as HC's switch out. Getting D 1 talent committed now will help in the future no matter who the coach is. They should be committing to the school right now, so unlikely they will decomit based on who is hired. Trying to make an argument for "It is Good" but I share your initial mixed response.

Tough to know for us, even tougher for the coaches , as their jobs and livelihood depend on getting this stuff right. I think I noticed 3 stars for three athletes and 2 stars for number 4. That, at least, is close to what we have been doing in the past, with a couple 4 stars thrown in each class ( hopefully ). In any case, due to body types - it seems to me like these kids are very talented, but will need to red shirt to add weight and strength. This is fine with me, because, we had quite a few redshirts burned this year - that got a boatload of experience. We have Petras as a 4 star coming in , along with ( I believe ), Dukart - which should help out the QB situation ( depth ), because we still have Willard , maybe Mason and one other that I cannot recall right now ( no offense intended , just at the end of a busy day and too many other names and places flashing around in my head ). We have all seen what happens with an injury to your signal caller and no contingency plans. So, I would say , I am in the middle with a 'solid' GOOD so far , but would also like to see some first line FG Kicker and Punter as well as some OL and DL that can help immediately. That may mean the JC gig. Also, now what happens with EVANS? He was supposed to be an immediate impact guy for us....so, far....CRICKETS !

To me the big thing is how many scholarships do we have for this year. I'd like there to be spots left for the new coach to fill, but you don't want so many that we can't fill up a class. I know nothing about the four recruits, but three of them are near the bottom of the current class as far as 247's numerical ratings. Now that doesn't mean they aren't good, but if to fill out the class we have to bring in recruits rated even lower it does make me worry how good this class will be. All that being said, I applaud these four young men committing to the school -- especially given the uncertainty of who the new coach will be.

You can't take enough grains of salt when you look at the current recruiting situation or any recruiting situation. If you believe there are x amount of pac 12 worthy recruits out there and x amount of Pac 12 scholarships available then logically the Beavs will get theirs if they just keep their ears to the ground and the lines of communication open. The verbal commitments are a string of dominos and when the heavyweight recruiters start reneging on some of their promises those recruits hit the market again and eventually you get a match of an underrated kid who wants to play pac 12 ball and OS holds his golden ticket. So don't pay too much attention to the particulars until they sign the dotted line.

The three "Big" recruits from the CGA era... Maybe we shouldn't pay attention until they actually play a single freaking down for the team Or better yet until they do something worthy of attention... So far the best CGA recruit has been.... a TWO star from florida who's other big offer was ::gulp:: Utah State... Art Pierce
