Certainly looks promising! Can't quite pull the trigger on paying for it though:)

Essentially says we are loaded and have the best middle infield combo in the country. Nothing we didn't already know.😃

Kevin Abel (rhp from San Diego) is the real deal. Alex McGarry (JC transfer) possibility at 1b. Two way player Christian Chamberlain good possibility for set-up or closer. Gambrel sitting at 91-96. Other pitchers showing better stuff. Heimlich was "electric" on the fall. They expect he will be high draft pick, even if Danny Moran is still writing articles.

Starting Pitching: Heimlich has increased his velo to 92-95 and showed more consistency on secondary pitches. He is the only arm currently "penciled in" as a weekend starter. Other candidates include (in order listed) Grant Gambrell (91-96 FB), Mitchell Verburg (upper 80s, low 90s), Jordan Britton (upper 80's, low 90s), Sam Tweedt (much improved, low 90s) and Bryce Fehmel (did not throw in fall). Full paragraph on Kevin Abel and his potential (low 90s, advanced change). The writer speculates he could/will be a weekend starter.
Bullpen: Casey would like to see someone emerge a shut down closer. Jake Mulholland and Brandon Eisert return with experience, Verburg has potential to either start or relieve and freshman two-way player Christian Chamberlain will also be used on the bump.
Position players: Outfield is set with Trevor Larnach, Steven Kwan, Jack Anderson and Preston Jones. Infield needs to replace KJ; Gretler could move from 3rd, Adley could move from catcher (unlikely), Tyler Malone (currently injured) and newcomer (sophomore) Alex McGarry are also in the mix. Odd that there was no mention of Zak Taylor. Middle infield of Grenier and Madrigal continue to improve.
None of the other returning infielders or other freshman were mentioned in the article.

Sounds like they missed Nobach as well. I thought they were considering Mulholland as a possible starter as well. Is this not true?

Yes, they missed the return of Kyle Nobach altogether - no mention at all.
Mulholland didn't throw in the fall, but I would think he is a more likely candidate to start than Verburg (also didn't throw in the fall) - whose longest outing last year was only 1.1 innings.

Zak Taylor was the best 1B in fall camp. Preston Jones had very limited time because of an injury.

And Zak was the replacement for KJ while he was out with his injuries last year. It will be interesting to see the starting rotation for the first 4 games in Surprise; based upon experience, it would be Heimlich (obvious #1), Fehmel, Tweedt and Britton. Can Gambrell or Abel (or someone else) get in the mix.
The position players seem pretty locked in.

We will have better options at 1B than Zak... because we have options at 3B to move Gretler if need be... I'd feel differently if I'd seen ZAk play a lot of 1B this summer, but he was catching more than anything. When I attended Zak struggled mightily this summer at the plate, before righting the ship, but only had maybe 7-10 innings at 1B... maybe 15-20 times that at catcher. I think we have some very good options at the other corner to move Gretler... who is very good there... or make a 1B out of someone else.

I would be very surprised to see anyone other than Gretler play more than a handful games at 3rd. However, the competition at first between Taylor, Malone, McGarry and possibly Zach Clayton will be very interesting. I don't think any of the options at 3rd would provide better offense that that group.

IMHO the 1B position needs to be a solid person who plays there every day. The rest of the infield needs someone consistent to throw at and know how they handle the bag. Go Beavs! In Pat Casey I Trust!
