He was on the move all spring and summer playing against top-level competition,” said Stephen Thompson, Ethan’s father and an Oregon State assistant coach. “Now, when he got to his senior season, he had already seen everything that could be thrown at him at that level.” Ethan Thompson, now an OSU freshman, used those experiences to lead Bishop Montgomery High in Los Angeles to a state championship while being named California’s state player of the year by numerous organizations and publications. He’s since made the jump to college and will soon see what the next level has in store. OSU men's basketball: Thompson making the transition

This is what I was hoping for:
“He’s vocalized his opinions when we’re on the court,” said Beavers guard Tanner Sanders. “If guys aren’t doing things the right way he’s not afraid to get into a guy, ‘you need to pick it up,’ which is awesome to see from a true freshman.”
Coach Wayne Tinkle says his team needs that. He began to see that leadership take form during the team’s practices leading up to its two-week tour of Spain in August, which included four games.

He really could be a game-changing talent for us, and it sounds like he has his Dad’s tenacity. Steven, Sr. was intense and fiery, and it looks like Stevie was named for his dad, but Ethan is built like his dad, both physically and mentally. This could be fun!

Yes, a freshman who comes in with enough confidence to critique the veterans like that is not displaying a freshman's normal diffidence. It could derive from an intuitive sense of basketball, the kind of intelligence that allows him to make automatic quick decisions when playing without having to think. I think he could end up making a difference for us like some of those other 5* players we've seen on other teams in their first year.
