As we start into the gray days of winter, and the DUGOUT hibernates, a quick quiz might bring life to the faithful.
This team has an established philosophy as to how they want to play the game of baseball. They preach, teach and emphasize a blueprint for offensive baseball. Some principles they follow are:
1. Empasize "selective aggressiveness" - when you get your pitch, attack it.
2. Determining the right pitch to hit is more important than power at the plate.
3. Reliance on good at bats throughout the lineup, good pitching, defense andsmart base-running to win.
4. Strive for a batting average over .200 when even or behind in the count with 2 strikes.
5. Be process oriented - go to the plate with a clear game plan and execute it.
6. Study opposing pitchers carefully - learn to recognize moves, pitches and patterns.
7. Know the strike zone, your strengths and weaknesses. Pitch selection is the key to good hitting.
8. Work for QPA points (quality plate appearances). You want at least 1 point for every 2 at bats. You earn points for:
a. a base hit
b. an extra base hit
b. base on balls
c. hit by pitch
d. sac fly
e. advancing a runner with an out
f. an RBI
g. an extended at bat - forcing the opposing pitcher throw at least 6 pitches.
h. jumping on a fastball down the pipe on the first pitch
9.. contact is paramount. If power accompanies contact, fine, but contact first. We swing at 43.8% of all pitches and make contact in 79.8 % of our at bats.
