static.pac-12.com/sports/basketball-w/stats/2016-17/HTML/confldrs.htm#conf.wktKind of interesting to look at the conference season stats for last year for the good the bad and the ugly. The Good. Conf Wins (of course) 1 Attendance 1 Scoring Defense 1 FG % Defense 1 3pt % Defense 1 Rebounding Offense 1 Rebounding Margin 1 Rebounding Defense 2 Defensive Rebounds 2 Defensive Rebound % 2 Scoring Margin 3 3-pt FG % 3 Blocked Shots 3 Assists 3 Offensive Rebound % 3 The Bad Scoring Offense 9 Free Throw % 10 The Ugly Steals 12 Turnover Margin 12 Hope we can improve that turnover margin a little this year. We were not only last but by a substantial margin.

Sydney was great, no doubt... but, she 'forced' a lot of passes into Marie that were either mis-handled or stolen. We need better point guard play and entry passes, plus a couple of girls with 'quicks' to the hoop that create an easy lay up, or another interior pass for an easy bank shot. Based on last year's roster, I would say that Pivec has the Right skill set. She, last year, was a little careless on protecting her backside and in tight defense dribbling situations. She will definitely fix this. Then, looking at the rest of the girls, we definitely need more girls willing to take a shot rather than passing the ball around until having to force a deep 3 when the clock runs down. I look forward to seeing how this new lineup works out. Defensively, we need another Gabby ( or two ).

Reacting to some of the low ranked areas:
The low free throw % issue should improve since a couple of the sub-500 FT shooters have departed, though we also lost a very reliable free thrower in Syd. I don't think our defensive style (stay in front of folks, make them take uncomfortable shots with good footwork, dominate on the boards) is conducive to ranking high in steals....along with the fact that we don't have a lot of Gary Payton-esque pickpockets on the roster. Even our defensive superstar (Gabby) didn't rank very high historically in steals. So I don't see our steals ranking rising much. Taking care of the ball has been the Achilles heel of this program - when we field teams that have great hygiene in this department, we will be killer. In some of our losses it felt like we were competing with ourselves to not have TOs as much as we were the other team. I think Slocum could help alter this stat.
Should be an interesting season. Go Beavs!
