Seems to me the biggest weakness on the 2017-18 WBB team will be in the PG position. Replacing Sydney would be difficult anyway, but we've got only 2 players on the team who are good dribblers: Taylor Kalmer and Aleah Goodman. Katie Mac is too big and therefore slow, and Pivec's ballhandling skills don't wow me, and of course Destiny Slocum is not eligible (though she is a shoo-in once eligible). Taylor doesn't seem to have the leadership skills and chutzpah needed, though I'm not counting her out. If she could just add some swagger to her game and play with more confidence, I'd love to see her out there. Goodman looks like a natural point guard, but she's so young that I wonder if she can show the leadership needed. These 2 players are the best we've got, and that's my biggest worry. We've got shooters (Tudor, Pivec, McWilliams) and a couple bigs, but PG is what makes it all work.

Not sure I'd call it a weakness, more like an unknown.
I don't think Katie is the correct choice, mostly for her versatility. She has played positions 1-4 and with our short bench this year we may need her in any of those positions. I think that one of the reasons that she was replaced as a starter on the wing is that we needed her to be Syd's backup. I hope we don't have that same situation this year.
I'm not sure I've ever even seen Taylor bring the ball up so I can't say how well she would do. As a pure shooter, I think I would keep her on the wing so she can just concentrate on her shot.
Kat falls into the same category as above.
That gives us Mikaela and Aleah. I think they are going to be point guard #1 and #2. Mik was a pg in high school and hopefully will take on the leadership role. If she is unable to do it then we will have to use KT. I have high hopes for Aleah, she is a natural point guard. She will give anyone a run for there money at point. It wouldn't surprise me to her get some real time bringing the ball up the court.

I think this is also why you are seeing some mention of playing faster this year. We have the defensive scheme to create missed shots for the opponent, bigs to rebound, and the team speed to get down the court. We need to not let opposing defenses get set and harass us all the way down the court, since by either analysis we are thin/weak/unknown at PG.
And those quick, harassing teams have given us fits in years past (especially when we have had long, lanky ball handlers without that super top gear). The problem goes away next year with Slocum, and hopefully some top-notch bigs to help fill Gulich's shoes.
Will be an interesting year. I think Kalmer and KTMac are due for breakout seasons.....and Goodman will be a pleasant surprise (so says her AAU coach).
Go Beavers!

First: I never saw evidence that Weise’s strengths were ‘point guard’ related. She was a leader, a great (streak) 3-point shooter...and off the charts in terms of intangibles. Bringing the ball up the court, and distributing - she was serviceable; but far from outstanding. Second: When teams keyed on Weise in that role, I think Pivec performed very well as an 2nd option - especially for a true freshman. I’m not a bit concerned about this aspect of play.
