October 7 in Oregon State History
Oregon State is 5-8-1 on October 7. Probably the two most memorable wins were:
1939. OREGON STATE 7 - Idaho 6. Game 2 of the 1939 9-1-1 Pineapple Bowl season. 1978. Oregon State 17 - MINNESOTA 14. The win over Minnesota was Oregon State's lone win East of the Mississippi between 1967 (Purdue) and 2002 (Temple).
The only other wins on the date were two wins over Idaho 26-0 in 1916 and 44-6 in 1961 and a 22-6 win over the alumni in 1922. The tie was a 0-0 tie with Gonzaga in Portland in the 1933 Ironmen year. to start the year 3-0-1.
October 7 is generally a dark day in Oregon State history, as it involved losses in 1967 (WASHINGTON 13 - Oregon State 6), 2000 (WASHINGTON 33 - Oregon State 30), and 2006 (Washington State 13 - OREGON STATE 6).
The loss in 1967 cost Oregon State the 1968 Rose Bowl bid against Indiana. The loss in 2000 cost Oregon State shot at the 2001 Orange Bowl against Oklahoma. The loss in 2006 probably cost Oregon State a 2006 Holiday Bowl bid against Texas A&M.
Oregon State against USC in the Coliseum.
Oregon State has not defeated USC in the Coliseum since 1960. Amos Alonzo Stagg announced his retirement as coach from Stockton Junior College. Dwight D. "Ike" Eisenhower was President. Hawai'i had been a state for exactly 392 days. Elvis Presley and Chubby Checker topped the charts.
